Zavier Zens Reconsiders As Badgers Make Sudden Move

Mr. Basketball of Wisconsin, Zavier Zens, reevaluates his college options as the Badgers make a strategic play to secure his talent following a coaching shakeup.

Zavier Zens, the standout Mr. Basketball of Wisconsin, was all set to join the Northern Iowa Panthers until a coaching shakeup sent him back to the drawing board.

With Ben Jacobson moving to Utah State, Zens found himself looking for a new team. Enter Greg Gard, the Wisconsin Badgers' head coach, who wasn't about to let this opportunity slip by again.

Gard has extended an offer to Zens and lined up a visit, signaling a major shift in his recruiting strategy.

Initially, Zens wasn't on Gard's radar for the 2026 recruiting class. But with Zens' stock rising, Gard is keen to secure top local talent, making Zens a focal point for Wisconsin. This move demonstrates Gard's commitment to building a strong future for the Badgers by locking down the best recruits in the state.

Nick Osen from @Badger247 hinted at this development, noting Zens' upcoming visit to Madison, which is set for about a week and a half from now. This visit could be the moment when Gard seals the deal with Zens, bringing the state's top talent into the fold.

Ranked as a 3-star recruit and the third-best player in Wisconsin by 24/7 Sports, Zens trails only Yusef Gray Jr., heading to Iowa State, and LaTrevion Fenderson, already committed to the Badgers. Yet, the Wisconsin Basketball Coaches Association committee sees Zens as the state's top player, awarding him the prestigious Mr. Basketball title.

Despite limited interest from high-major programs, Zens' potential is undeniable. After parting ways with Northern Iowa, Gard saw an opportunity to bring Zens into the Badgers' program. While Zens might need some time to develop, his high ceiling is reminiscent of Zach Kinziger, a promising player from Gard's previous recruiting class.

With the offer on the table and a visit imminent, Gard is poised to make a strong case for Zens to join the Badgers, potentially solidifying Wisconsin's hold on elite in-state talent.
