In a heartwarming twist, Wisconsin assistant coach Sharif Chambliss has been named the Big Ten’s Howard Moore Assistant Coach of the Year, marking a first for the UW program. This prestigious honor, named after a cherished former UW assistant, is a testament to Chambliss’ impactful role both on and off the court.
Reflecting on the award, Chambliss shared that the recognition goes beyond basketball. It's about the lasting relationships he's built throughout his career. He fondly recalled moments with former players who reach out to him during significant life events, emphasizing the deep connections formed over the years.
The surprise announcement came during a Wisconsin basketball practice, where head coach Greg Gard orchestrated a secretive visit from Chambliss’ family. This touching moment underscored the significance of the award, which highlights contributions to student-athletes' development and community betterment.
Chambliss, a former UW team captain, is in his fifth season on Gard’s staff. His coaching journey has taken him through roles at Wright State, UW-Milwaukee, UW-Platteville, and Francis Marion University, as well as a stint as UW’s video coordinator.
Despite the busy end-of-season schedule, Chambliss was aware of Gard’s nomination for the award. However, the news, delivered by Howard Moore’s son, Jerell, was a poignant full-circle moment, reminding Chambliss of his connections to Moore and the Wisconsin basketball family.
One memorable encounter with Moore came after a game when Chambliss was coaching at UW-Milwaukee. Despite a tough loss, Moore and his family graciously visited Chambliss and his team, highlighting the strong bonds within the Wisconsin basketball community.
Now, with this accolade in hand, Chambliss is eager to channel this recognition into postseason success for the Badgers. The award not only celebrates his achievements but also fuels the team’s motivation as they head into tournament play, ready to prove their mettle on the court.
