Wisconsins Big Ten Rise Suddenly Feels Real Under Luke Fickell

Despite Indiana's supremacy, traditional Big Ten stalwarts like Penn State and Illinois find themselves in unfamiliar territory following recent setbacks.

The Big Ten’s Week 5 shakeup came with the kind of chaos that makes these rankings feel alive. A few teams are still rolling, a few are hanging on, and a couple of programs that looked sturdy a year ago are sliding fast. Wisconsin is one of the rare movers headed the right direction, while Penn State and Illinois are dropping like rocks.

These rankings are built strictly on what teams have done this season, not on preseason reputation or how dangerous they might look on paper. Undefeated teams sit near the top.

Teams losing keep falling. And for clubs like Wisconsin and Ohio State, taking a shot at elite competition and coming up short doesn’t send them straight to the bottom.

Indiana still owns the top spot after flattening Rutgers, a result that barely qualified as news. The Hoosiers keep doing what they’ve done all season, and that means staying first.

Ohio State follows at No. 2 after handling the surging Iowa Hawkeyes without much stress. The Buckeyes scored in every quarter, never let the game get close, and continue to look like one of the strongest teams in the country. Their only loss is to top-ranked Texas, which keeps that defeat from hurting them much here.

UCLA sits third, even though the Bruins were on a bye. They’ll head to Oregon this week, and that matchup should tell everyone whether this team is for real or just borrowing the spotlight for a little while longer.

Nebraska comes in at No. 4 after taking care of Maryland and staying unbeaten. The Cornhuskers keep finding ways to win, even when it isn’t pretty.

This week brings the real measuring stick: Indiana. If Nebraska can somehow pull that off, Matt Rhule will get his flowers.

Wisconsin lands at No. 5, and there’s plenty to like about what Luke Fickell has done. The Badgers head into their bye week perfect in Big Ten play, with their only loss coming against Notre Dame to open the season.

Northwestern keeps turning heads at No. 6.

The Wildcats already hung around with Indiana a few weeks ago, and then they went out and dismantled Penn State on Friday. That’s a serious jolt for a program that suddenly looks like it has some juice.

They’ll face Ball State in a random non-conference game this week.

Minnesota checks in at No. 7 with just one blemish, a loss to Mississippi State. The results haven’t always been pretty, but the Golden Gophers are 2-0 and moving on to Purdue.

Iowa slides to No. 8 after running into Ohio State. That’s the kind of loss that doesn’t crush a team’s standing, and the Hawkeyes should have a chance to climb again soon. Their Friday matchup with Washington should be a good one, since both teams need a rebound.

Oregon is ninth, and the Ducks are probably a little lower than they should be - but that loss to Oklahoma State still hangs around. They need to make a statement against UCLA at home this weekend and show that result was a fluke.

USC rounds out the top 10. Lincoln Riley is on shaky ground in this prove-it year, and the Trojans keep surviving close calls.

The win over Washington was too close for comfort and nearly turned into a home loss. Now USC gets Penn State, and the Nittany Lions will be desperate.

Purdue moves up to No. 11 after a huge win over Illinois in Champaign. That was a welcome breakthrough for the Boilermakers, who haven’t exactly been stacking Big Ten wins lately. Next up is Minnesota, and they need to keep it going.

Washington is 12th after another rough outing, this time against USC. Starting conference play 0-2 was not what Jedd Fisch had in mind, but the Huskies get a chance to make a statement against Iowa on Friday.

Michigan sits 13th after a bye week. The Wolverines hoped Kyle Whittingham would be the right hire, and maybe he just needs time, but the early returns haven’t been great. They’re 0-2 in Big Ten play and now have some time to sort it out.

Illinois has fallen to No. 14 after losing to Purdue. That drops the Illini to 2-3 overall and 0-2 in the Big Ten, which is about as bad as it looks.

Penn State is next at No. 15, and the fall is ugly. Wisconsin thought it had landed a statement win over a ranked Penn State team, but that win looks a lot less impressive now that the Nittany Lions have shown they’re not very good. USC is waiting this week, and Penn State badly needs something positive.

Michigan State is 16th, and its game with Illinois this weekend is a battle for the bottom of the conference. Not exactly prime-time material.

Maryland comes in at No. 17, with Mike Locksley’s situation hanging over everything. That’s the story there.

Rutgers brings up the rear at No. 18, and the Scarlet Knights look flat-out terrible this season.

Wisconsin Just Won Again And The Poll Still Sent A Message

Wisconsin kept rolling with a 31-3 win over Michigan State, making it four straight for a team that has started to look more settled on both sides of the ball. Even so, the AP poll did not reward the Badgers with a spot in the Top 25, as they slid from the highest-ranked team in the receiving-votes group to No. 3 there instead.

The message from the voters was plain enough: the leap back into the rankings is still waiting, even after a lopsided conference win. Wisconsin gets a Week 6 bye to sort things out, then returns to face a ranked UCLA team in what should be a useful measuring-stick game for where the Badgers really stand. [Read more 🡒]

Wisconsins PFF Grades Show One Big Reason To Feel Better

After taking care of Penn State on the road, Wisconsin backed it up at home against Michigan State and pushed its record to 4-1 overall and 2-0 in Big Ten play. The latest Pro Football Focus grades offered another layer to the encouraging start, with several Badgers standing out in the kind of areas that tend to travel well in conference play, especially along the line on both sides of the ball.

The numbers pointed to real progress in pass blocking, run defense and pass rushing, the sort of across-the-board work that can make a team harder to play against as the schedule stiffens. Wisconsin still has plenty to prove, but the early return from those grades is hard to miss: this is a group getting better in the trenches, and that usually tells you something about how sustainable a start really is. Colton Joseph Just Changed The Feel Of Wisconsins Offense

Colton Josephs breakout against Michigan State gave Wisconsin a much-needed jolt and, maybe more importantly, a different look on offense. The Badgers got production through the air and on the ground from their quarterback, and Josephs 145 passing yards paired with 141 rushing yards made the attack feel more balanced and far less predictable than it had earlier in the season. His day also brought hardware, as he was named co-Big Ten Offensive Player of the Week, the first Wisconsin player to claim that honor since 2021.

For Wisconsin, the bigger significance may be what Josephs performance suggests about where this offense can go next. His rushing total and touchdown run set notable program marks for a Badgers quarterback, giving the coaching staff a reminder that the position can be a real rushing threat, not just a pocket-based operation. After a showing like that, the question around the program shifts from whether the offense can change its feel to how much of that new identity can stick. [Read more 🡒]
