Wisconsin Still Has Two Big Questions After The Penn State Upset

Can Wisconsin maintain their momentum and secure another Big Ten victory against Michigan State despite offensive challenges?

Wisconsin’s trip through Big Ten play has already taken a sharp turn, and now the betting market is asking a new question: can the Badgers back up that upset of No. 13 Penn State with another clean performance at home against Michigan State?

The number says yes, but only by a little. Wisconsin is listed as a 9.5-point favorite over the Spartans after opening conference play on the road as 9.5-point underdogs in Week 4. That swing tells the story of where these teams stand right now, even if the line feels modest after what Wisconsin just did in Happy Valley.

There’s a case to be made that the spread should be wider. Wisconsin just knocked off a top-15 team on the road, while Michigan State is coming off a home blowout loss to Nebraska. But the matchup details explain why oddsmakers are keeping this one within reach.

The biggest reason is ball security. Wisconsin’s offense was shaky for long stretches against Penn State, and Colton Joseph has been living dangerously.

His eight “turnover-worthy plays” are tied for third-worst in the country, according to Pro Football Focus. That kind of profile can keep an opponent hanging around, even when the better team is controlling most of the game.

Michigan State has its own turnover concerns, though. The Spartans have just one interception this season, and quarterback Alessio Milivojevic is not far behind Joseph with seven turnover-worthy plays of his own. That leaves both teams vulnerable to giving away possessions, which is exactly the kind of thing that can decide a game like this.

Wisconsin’s defense also gives it a real edge. The Badgers were outstanding against Penn State, and the source material makes clear just how dominant that effort was.

Penn State still owns the No. 9 total defense in the country despite the loss, but Wisconsin’s defense made the Nittany Lions look stuck for most of the afternoon. Outside of a couple isolated drives that ended in field goals, Penn State did not move the ball with any consistency.

That same defensive standard could travel into this matchup. Michigan State’s offense has been uneven, Milivojevic has been mistake prone, and the loss of tailback Cam Edwards for the year takes another hit out of the run game. If Wisconsin brings anything close to the level it showed in Beaver Stadium, the Spartans may have a hard time getting into the teens.

The run defense numbers also point toward Wisconsin being able to control the game. Michigan State ranks No. 63 nationally and is allowing 124 rushing yards per game. That’s respectable, but not imposing, and the two Power Four teams it has faced - Notre Dame and Nebraska - both ran for 161 and 157 yards, respectively.

That matters because Wisconsin still needs a cleaner showing on offense than it got last week. Even with the upset over Penn State, the Badgers did not fully solve their own issues running the ball or protecting it. So while the defense may be capable of carrying the day, the offense may not be ready to turn this into a runaway.

That’s why the under also looks appealing. Last week’s total of 44.5 landed under in Wisconsin’s 24-20 win, and another lower-scoring game makes sense here if the Badgers’ defense shows up again and Michigan State continues to struggle finding answers.

The expectation here is pretty straightforward: Wisconsin should be able to keep Michigan State in check, probably somewhere in the 10-14 point range, and still do enough on the other side to create some breathing room. It may not be a fireworks show, but the Badgers look positioned to handle the Spartans and stay on track in Big Ten play.

Wisconsin Just Landed The Kind Of Recruit Fans Have Been Waiting For

Jalanie Georges commitment gives Wisconsin a splashy early win in the 2028 cycle and, just as importantly, another sign that the Badgers can still land a national recruit with real heavyweight competition for his signature. The consensus four-star edge rusher from Desert Edge High School in Arizona picked Wisconsin over programs like Washington, Auburn and Miami, a list that says plenty about the kind of attention he drew well before his senior season.

For Wisconsin, this is the type of addition that can change the tone of a recruiting class and lift the programs standing beyond the Midwest. George arrives as one of the highest-ranked recruits in Badgers football history, and his decision should help Wisconsins national recruiting profile in a class that already looks like it could matter far beyond the usual spring and summer buzz. Kelly Sheffield Nearly Turned A Wisconsin Rout Into A Huge Scare

Wisconsin looked like it might cruise after jumping out to a two-set lead against No. 15 Indiana at the UW Field House, but the night turned into something far more stressful before the Badgers finally came away with a five-set win. Head coach Kelly Sheffield made lineup changes that seemed to unsettle the flow, and Indiana took advantage by climbing back to even the match and putting real pressure on a Wisconsin team that had been in control early.

The Badgers did get the result they needed, and Decelise Champions late return gave Wisconsin a lift at the right time as the match tightened into a battle of nerves and momentum. Still, the way a comfortable rout nearly slipped away will give Sheffield and his staff plenty to sort through, even with a win over a ranked opponent in hand. [Read more 🡒]

Wisconsin Just Delivered A Rare Uniform Win Fans Fully Embrace

Wisconsins latest uniform reveal has landed exactly the way schools hope these things do but rarely do: with fans, former players and social media all piling on with praise. The Badgers new Red Out alternates lean into a bold all-red look, pairing it with a vintage 1970s W helmet logo and a Bucky W patch on the sleeve, a combination that feels tailored for a crowd already primed to go all-in on the theme.

The timing helps, too, with the look set for Homecoming weekend against Michigan State, when the fan-led red out should make Camp Randall feel even more coordinated. For a program that tends to treat tradition carefully, this one has struck a rare balance between fresh and familiar, and the early reaction suggests Wisconsin may have found a uniform that works well beyond the novelty of a one-off reveal.
