The Wisconsin Badgers’ secondary took a hit after Week 2, with cornerback Cai Bates suffering a torn ACL that will end his season.
Bates, a transfer from Florida State, shared the news on Instagram, according to SI’s Seamus Rohrer. Wisconsin had already listed him as out on its first availability report against Penn State.
“As soon as I started to truly have fun again, feeling like myself again, faced with another challenge. Torn ACL Week 2,” the post read, per Rohrer. “Always been strong minded, I’ll be back stronger and better and have a story to tell.”
The injury is a tough break for a player Wisconsin had slotted as the No. 2 boundary corner behind starter Javan Robinson. The Badgers liked their options at corner this offseason, with Jai’mier Scott and Eric Fletcher handling the other corner spot in rotation.
Bates played sparingly through the first two games, logging just eight snaps total while getting a little more work on special teams. With him sidelined, Wisconsin may need true freshman Donovan Dunmore to step into the No. 2 role on the two-deep.
Luke Fickell had already pointed to Dunmore as a player who would contribute right away on special teams starting in Week 1, and he’s picked up a solid number of snaps there through three weeks.
Bates stood out physically at 6’3 and 200 pounds, giving Wisconsin a corner with unusual length. He still has two more years of eligibility after 2026 and will now turn his focus to recovery.

Wisconsins Penn State Chances Suddenly Come Down To One Big Concern
The first Big Ten availability report for Wisconsins matchup with Penn State offered an immediate look at how much depth both teams may have to lean on when they meet. The Badgers listed four players as out, five as questionable and four as probable, while Penn States report also came with notable absences and a cluster of uncertain names as the week moves on.
For Wisconsin, the bigger issue is not just who is already ruled out, but how many key decisions are still hanging over the game. Penn States side adds to the intrigue with star receiver Koby Howard among the players unavailable, and six more Nittany Lions listed as questionable. In a game where both staffs are already sorting through injuries, the final availability report could end up shaping the matchup as much as anything on the field. [Read more 🡒]
Wisconsin Heads To Penn State With A Secondary Problem It Can't Ignore
As Wisconsin turns to Week 4 at Penn State, the conversation is already drifting toward availability as much as matchup. The Badgers are trying to navigate a secondary that took another blow with Florida State transfer cornerback Bates suffering a torn ACL and being expected to miss the season, a development that only sharpens the pressure on a defense that has to hold up on the road in a difficult environment.
The injury picture is still far from settled around Madison, with Mason Posa, Eugene Hilton Jr., Malachi Coleman, Abu Sama and Bryan Jackson all carrying different statuses heading into the trip. Penn State, meanwhile, has its own questions to sort through with starting center Brock Riker and tight end Andrew Rappleyea listed as questionable, while the Nittany Lions also will be without wide receiver Koby Howard for an extended stretch after his injury announcement. Wisconsin Could Get A Dangerous Weapon Back For Penn State
Wisconsins initial injury report ahead of Penn State offered a potentially useful bit of news for the Badgers, with Malachi Coleman listed as questionable after sitting out previous games because of a concussion. Its the kind of late-week development that matters in a matchup like this, where every extra option can help a Wisconsin offense searching for more juice.
Colemans presence would give the Badgers another dangerous piece to work with against a Penn State defense that wont make things easy. Wisconsin has several other players on the report as questionable, too, but getting Coleman back into the mix would be the most notable boost if he is able to go. [Read more 🡒]
