Wisconsin Loses Key Transfer Tied to Top Recruit's Commitment

With his brother already gone and his intentions clear, Wisconsins veteran cornerback becomes the latest ripple in a shifting secondary that now demands urgent reinforcements.

Wisconsin CB Geimere Latimer Plans to Enter Transfer Portal, One Year of Eligibility Remaining

The writing had been on the wall for a while, but now it’s official: Wisconsin cornerback Geimere Latimer is planning to enter the transfer portal when it opens on January 2nd. The veteran defensive back has one year of eligibility remaining and will be looking for a new home to close out his college career.

Latimer’s decision doesn’t come as a shock to those following the Badgers’ recruiting trail. He was a key figure in Wisconsin’s pursuit of his younger brother, four-star linebacker Amari Latimer.

When Amari flipped on signing day and committed to West Virginia, the likelihood of Geimere sticking around in Madison took a major hit. And now, with Geimere announcing his intent to transfer, the Badgers are officially down another experienced piece in their secondary.

While Geimere can't officially enter the portal until January 2nd, this is college football in 2025 - the lines between official and unofficial are blurrier than ever. Behind the scenes, conversations are already happening. NIL discussions, agent contacts, and early feelers are part of the modern transfer landscape, and players declaring their intent early is just part of the new normal.

On the field, Latimer played primarily as a slot corner in Wisconsin’s defensive rotation. He wasn’t a full-time starter, but he was a steady contributor, finishing this past season with 23 total tackles and one forced fumble. Over his three years with the Badgers, he racked up 79 tackles, four interceptions, five pass deflections, and two forced fumbles - solid production from a player who carved out his role in a competitive secondary.

His departure does thin out an already stretched defensive backfield. But in terms of impact, the bigger blow came earlier - when Amari chose to head elsewhere.

That move not only cost the Badgers a top defensive recruit, but also set the stage for Geimere’s exit. Now Wisconsin has to deal with the reality: the defensive back room needs reinforcements, and fast.

Head coach Luke Fickell was already expected to hit the portal hard this offseason to bolster the secondary. Geimere’s departure only turns up the urgency.

The staff has already started making moves, including reaching out to at least one Division II defensive back - a sign that the wheels are already turning. (In Division II, portal rules allow players to move earlier than their FBS counterparts.)

Fickell’s aggressive approach to roster building has been a hallmark of his tenure, and this situation will be no different. The Badgers have to reload in the secondary, and they’ll be looking for experience, versatility, and immediate impact. Whether that comes from the FBS ranks or lower levels, expect Wisconsin to be active - and fast - once the portal officially opens in January.

As for Geimere Latimer, the next step in his college journey is still to be determined. But with his brother now at West Virginia, it wouldn’t be surprising to see the Latimers reunite. Either way, Geimere brings experience, production, and positional versatility to the table - and he’ll be a valuable pickup for whichever program lands him.
