Wisconsin is already making noise in the 2028 recruiting cycle, and two Ohio offensive linemen have quickly emerged as names to watch.
The Badgers are pushing hard for Archbishop Moeller interior offensive lineman Jace Montgomery and Marysville offensive tackle Collin Burris, a pair of three-star prospects who have piled up offers and sit among the better linemen in both their state and the class. Montgomery is ranked 17th in Ohio and 557th nationally, while Burris checks in at No. 26 in the state rankings, with both players firmly inside the top 800 recruits overall.
Montgomery’s connection to Wisconsin runs deeper than a recruiting visit. He lived in Wisconsin in the past and has already been on campus twice, first last year and again in April. He also brings a familiar football name with him: he is the son of Jerry Montgomery, the former Green Bay Packers defensive line coach who is now with the Cincinnati Bengals.
Burris, meanwhile, made his first trip to Madison just a few weeks ago for the annual Bucky’s Barbecue recruiting event. During that visit, he met with assistant coach Eric Mateos for a second time and also spent time with head coach Luke Fickell, who shares Burris’ Ohio roots. The visit gave Wisconsin a chance to strengthen the relationship, and that process is now expected to continue.
For now, neither recruitment appears close to a decision. The 2028 class is still in its early stages, and Wisconsin likely won’t be hearing commitment talk from Burris or Montgomery anytime soon.
The competition could get serious as things develop. Burris already holds offers from Iowa State, Indiana, and Virginia Tech, among others, and has also drawn interest from Ohio State. If the Buckeyes do offer, Wisconsin could be staring at a tougher fight.
Montgomery’s offer list is even longer, with LSU, Michigan, Iowa, Penn State, Oklahoma, and North Carolina all in the mix. The Badgers have a natural angle with his family ties to Wisconsin and Green Bay, but Iowa has one too. Jerry Montgomery played his college ball for the Hawkeyes under current coach Kirk Ferentz, which gives the Badgers another program to worry about as the race unfolds.
