Wisconsin Has A Chance To Make USC A Massive Camp Randall Stage

Excitement builds as Wisconsin gears up for a primetime clash against USC, highlighting a marquee Big Ten showdown in Week 8.

Wisconsin’s home date with USC will get the spotlight treatment.

The Big Ten announced Monday afternoon that the Badgers’ Week 8 showdown with the Trojans in Madison will kick off at 7:30 p.m. ET, 6:30 p.m.

CT on NBC. It will be Wisconsin’s second straight Saturday night game on the network.

USC comes into the matchup ranked No. 19 after surviving a 31-23 road win at Penn State in the White Out. That result dropped the Nittany Lions to 0-3 in conference play.

The Trojans have a bye in Week 7, while Wisconsin heads west first to face undefeated, No. 12 UCLA.

The broadcast slot makes sense. On paper, this looks like one of the most attractive Big Ten games on the Week 8 slate, with USC already back on track after two wins following its lopsided loss to Oregon. Wisconsin is 4-1 overall and 2-0 in league play, giving the matchup enough juice even before the Badgers finish their trip to Pasadena.

That game at UCLA could make the USC matchup even more compelling. The Bruins are ranked No. 12, their highest ranking since 2022, and if Wisconsin leaves California with a win, the Badgers would return home at 5-1 and 3-0 in the Big Ten. They’d also have road wins over then-No. 13 and then-No. 12, which would almost certainly move them into the AP Top-25 and turn the USC game into a ranked night clash in Madison.

USC’s resume has taken some hits in the public eye, especially after the 41-7 loss to Oregon and linebacker Desman Stephen II’s blatantly illegal and dangerous hit on Ducks quarterback Dante Moore, followed by no one on the Trojans’ sideline taking accountability. Even so, the Trojans are 6-1 and have kept winning despite still not having faced a true contender.

The numbers show a defense that still has work to do. USC is allowing 350 yards per game, which ranks 68th nationally, and the pass defense has been especially vulnerable at 239 yards allowed per game, 108th in the country.

But the talent is obvious. The group is fast, athletic and loaded.

On offense, the headliner is quarterback Jayden Maiava, who has thrown for 2,045 yards, accounted for 20 total touchdowns and has only three interceptions. He gives USC the kind of firepower that can turn a night game into a track meet.

For Wisconsin, the formula is clear. If the Badgers can drag USC into a Big Ten-style game built on defense and line-of-scrimmage work, they’ll like their chances. If this becomes a shootout with Maiava and the Trojans’ receivers, that’s where the danger starts.

Wisconsin Comes Out Of The Bye With One Big Offensive Question

The bye week gave Wisconsin a little time to get healthy before turning the page to UCLA, and the latest update brings at least one encouraging sign for an offense that could use some stability. Tailback Abu Sama is expected to be available, which would help a backfield looking to carry more of the load as the Badgers come out of the break.

The bigger question sits in the middle of the line, where center Austin Kawecki is dealing with an injury to his snapping hand and his status is still uncertain. Luke Fickell was careful in his update and stopped short of putting either player on the record as definitively good to go, leaving Wisconsin with some waiting to do before it knows exactly how settled the offense will be when UCLA arrives. Wisconsin Could Catch A Huge Break Before UCLA Game

UCLAs quarterback situation suddenly became one of the biggest storylines on the Badgers radar after Nico Iamaleava left the Bruins Week 6 game against Oregon with a leg injury and never came back for the second half. Head coach Bob Chesney said Iamaleava was not close to returning, and the next step was more evaluation, which leaves a major question hanging over UCLA as it turns its attention toward Wisconsin.

In Iamaleavas place, senior transfer Ty Dieffenbach stepped in and helped UCLA finish off the win, giving the Bruins a viable backup option if the injury lingers. For Wisconsin, the timing matters, since any uncertainty at quarterback could shape how UCLA approaches the game and how the Badgers prepare for what may be a very different-looking offense. Wisconsin Has A Ranking Chance Luke Fickell Fans Have Been Waiting For

Wisconsin keeps finding itself on the outside of the AP Top 25, even after stacking up recent wins that should have steadied its place in the poll. Instead, the Badgers slipped a little further back as teams like Kentucky, Wake Forest and Northwestern moved in, while Pitt, Oregon and Florida dropped out. For Luke Fickells group, it is another reminder that winning alone has not been enough to satisfy the voters, and that every week still carries weight in a crowded rankings race.

Week 7 gives Wisconsin a shot to change that conversation in a hurry. The Badgers will face No. 12 UCLA, a matchup that offers the kind of stage they need if they want to break through the logjam just outside the rankings and make a stronger case to the pollsters. For a team still searching for national traction, this is the sort of opportunity that can reshape how the rest of the season feels. [Read more 🡒]
