Wisconsin Catches Major Break At Perfect Time

Wisconsin may face a reshuffled UCLA offense as they prepare for a potential opportunity against the uncertain quarterback situation.

Wisconsin may catch a break before it even gets to Pasadena.

UCLA’s upset win over then-No. 13 Oregon came with a cost, as starting quarterback Nico Iamaleava went down with a leg injury and did not return for the second half. A little more than a day after the game, his status still wasn’t clear, and UCLA head coach Bob Chesney didn’t exactly leave the door wide open when he addressed the injury.

“He wasn’t close to being able to come back today,” Chesney said. “I thought he got hit in the thigh. There might be a little more to it, which we’ll have to figure out as we go through the process tonight and tomorrow.”

That means the Badgers will be watching closely when Wisconsin and UCLA release their injury reports Wednesday night. For now, Iamaleava looks at least questionable, and maybe doubtful, heading into Saturday afternoon’s matchup.

If he can’t play, UCLA will have to lean on Ty Dieffenbach again. The senior transfer replaced Iamaleava against Oregon and went 3-of-6 for 43 yards and a touchdown. Chesney chose him over Madden Iamaleava, Nico’s brother, who had seen a few snaps in UCLA’s wins over Maryland and Purdue and had seemed to be the No. 2 quarterback.

That setup matters because the choice in Eugene may be the one UCLA uses again. Early in the season, Madden looked like the primary backup, but Dieffenbach got the call in a huge road game and delivered enough to help the Bruins escape with the win. If Nico Iamaleava is unavailable against Wisconsin, Chesney would likely turn right back to him.

Dieffenbach arrived at UCLA this offseason from FCS Cal Poly after previously being with Pitt. The 6-6, 227-pound quarterback has Division-I experience in the background, but he never got on the field for Pittsburgh.

Last season at Cal Poly, he completed 58.6 percent of his passes for 1,305 yards, nine touchdowns and nine interceptions. He also rushed for 321 yards and four scores.

Against Oregon, though, the legs weren’t much of a factor. Dieffenbach finished with four carries for minus-15 yards.

Even so, UCLA was good enough to pull off the upset, and Oregon made life easier than it should have by turning the ball over seven times, including two interceptions and five lost fumbles. Still, as Oregon found out last week when backup quarterback Dylan Raiola was thrust into action against USC and played well, preparing for a backup all week is a much different challenge than trying to adjust on the fly. Dieffenbach brings a different style than Iamaleava, and the Ducks couldn’t solve it in real time.

Wisconsin still has a difficult assignment either way. UCLA is physical, well-coached and has real top-end talent, especially at tailback Wayne Knight. But if Iamaleava is out, the Badgers would be facing a significantly different Bruins offense - and that would be a major development before kickoff.

Wisconsin Comes Out Of The Bye With One Big Offensive Question

The bye week gave Wisconsin a little time to get healthy before turning the page to UCLA, and the latest update brings at least one encouraging sign for an offense that could use some stability. Tailback Abu Sama is expected to be available, which would help a backfield looking to carry more of the load as the Badgers come out of the break.

The bigger question sits in the middle of the line, where center Austin Kawecki is dealing with an injury to his snapping hand and his status is still uncertain. Luke Fickell was careful in his update and stopped short of putting either player on the record as definitively good to go, leaving Wisconsin with some waiting to do before it knows exactly how settled the offense will be when UCLA arrives. Wisconsin Could Catch A Huge Break Before UCLA Game

UCLAs quarterback situation suddenly became one of the biggest storylines on the Badgers radar after Nico Iamaleava left the Bruins Week 6 game against Oregon with a leg injury and never came back for the second half. Head coach Bob Chesney said Iamaleava was not close to returning, and the next step was more evaluation, which leaves a major question hanging over UCLA as it turns its attention toward Wisconsin.

In Iamaleavas place, senior transfer Ty Dieffenbach stepped in and helped UCLA finish off the win, giving the Bruins a viable backup option if the injury lingers. For Wisconsin, the timing matters, since any uncertainty at quarterback could shape how UCLA approaches the game and how the Badgers prepare for what may be a very different-looking offense. Wisconsin Has A Ranking Chance Luke Fickell Fans Have Been Waiting For

Wisconsin keeps finding itself on the outside of the AP Top 25, even after stacking up recent wins that should have steadied its place in the poll. Instead, the Badgers slipped a little further back as teams like Kentucky, Wake Forest and Northwestern moved in, while Pitt, Oregon and Florida dropped out. For Luke Fickells group, it is another reminder that winning alone has not been enough to satisfy the voters, and that every week still carries weight in a crowded rankings race.

Week 7 gives Wisconsin a shot to change that conversation in a hurry. The Badgers will face No. 12 UCLA, a matchup that offers the kind of stage they need if they want to break through the logjam just outside the rankings and make a stronger case to the pollsters. For a team still searching for national traction, this is the sort of opportunity that can reshape how the rest of the season feels. [Read more 🡒]
