Former Wisconsin Badgers basketball standout Sam Dekker has shared his thoughts on the viral moment involving UConn Huskies head coach Dan Hurley. The incident occurred after UConn's thrilling 73-72 victory over the Duke Blue Devils in the Elite Eight of the 2026 NCAA Tournament.
In a moment that caught everyone’s attention, Hurley was seen on video appearing to give an official a playful headbutt after freshman guard Braylon Mullins nailed a game-winning three-pointer. Hurley, known for his fiery personality, didn’t receive a technical foul for the gesture-a decision that could have dramatically altered the game’s outcome. Referee Roger Ayers seemed unperturbed, allowing the moment to pass without penalty.
Dekker, however, sees it differently. He expressed his opinion on social media, stating, “I have no bias here.
This is a tech 10/10 times. For multiple reasons… it would have lost the game for his team and he would have tried to fight the officials like he did nothing wrong.
I just don’t understand it at all. Also, referees need to grow a spine in instances like this.”
Roger Ayers later shared his perspective with Seth Greenberg, explaining that he wasn’t even aware of the incident. According to Ayers, “But that situation right there, that is absolutely nothing.
I talked to Roger today. He said, ‘What are you talking about?’
He literally didn’t know what I was talking about. He said, ‘Nothing happened.
The ball went in. I was running back.
They were celebrating. (Dan Hurley) leaned in, said something to me.
I said something to him. It was absolutely nothing.’”
Whether Dekker’s view will shift remains to be seen, but Hurley’s actions certainly added another layer of excitement to this year’s March Madness.
