Back on January 3rd, the Wisconsin Badgers faced a tough night at the Kohl Center, falling 89-73 to the fifth-ranked Purdue Boilermakers. It was a game where the Badgers struggled with their shooting, hitting just 4-of-25 from beyond the arc, and their defense allowed Purdue to connect on 46% of their shots. This loss came during a challenging stretch for Wisconsin, especially in Quad 1 games, and tensions were evident as Nick Boyd was seen expressing his frustration with Austin Rapp on the court.
Fast forward to March 8th, and what a turnaround it’s been for the Badgers. They’ve secured four wins over ranked teams since that tough loss, including sweet revenge against Purdue with a 97-93 victory at Mackey Arena. After the game, Purdue’s head coach, Matt Painter, didn’t hold back in praising Wisconsin for their impressive resurgence.
Painter, known for his candid insights, described Wisconsin as “a tough out” for the upcoming NCAA tournament. Reflecting on their season, he said, "They didn’t seem like they were on the same page when we played the first game, and obviously, they are now.
That’s what competition does. It wakes you up.
Our game was probably one of the most important they had all year. To win at Illinois, at Michigan, and at Purdue speaks volumes for the makeup of this team.
And they did it today without Nolan Winter, who’s a big piece of what they do.”
Painter’s comments highlighted not just the Badgers’ growth but also underscored the challenges faced by his own team.
The Badgers are hitting their stride at just the right time, playing some of their best basketball as they head into the NCAA tournament. But first, they’ll look to bolster their NCAA seed in the Big Ten Tournament in Chicago. Wisconsin is set to face the winner of Washington and USC on March 12th, with a potential rematch against Illinois on the horizon if they advance.
