Luke Fickell’s seat at Wisconsin cooled off for a while, but the Iowa loss brought the heat right back.
The Badgers entered Halloween with some real momentum. They were back in the rankings for the first time since Week 2 of 2023, sitting at 5-2 overall after hammering No.
16 USC the week before. That had changed the conversation around the program, and for a stretch it looked like the talk about Fickell’s job security had faded.
Then came Iowa.
The Hawkeyes beat Wisconsin again, and this one hit harder because of how one-sided the series has become under Fickell. The loss dropped him to 0-4 against Iowa in his Wisconsin tenure, and the numbers are ugly: Iowa has outscored the Badgers 124-16 in those four games.
That kind of gap is hard to shrug off, even with Iowa’s reputation as a steady winner. Getting blown out three years in a row is not something Wisconsin can just wave away, especially when one of the biggest games on the schedule keeps ending the same way. Not having the team ready for that matchup is a major problem.
At the same time, it’s not as simple as counting wins and losses. Fickell has earned credit for some of the steps forward this season.
The road win over Penn State and the home win over USC both mattered, because those are the kind of games Wisconsin was losing a year or two ago. The Week 1 loss to Notre Dame was competitive for a while, even if the second half got away.
And the loss to UCLA doesn’t look nearly as damaging now, with the Bruins still undefeated and ranked 8th in the country. West Coast trips are tough, and that happens.
Still, in Madison, the standard goes beyond the overall record. Trophy games carry extra weight, and that’s where the frustration with Fickell keeps coming back.
The Badgers were 0-3 against Iowa under him before this season and 1-2 against Minnesota. When you keep missing against your rivals, the progress elsewhere starts to feel smaller than it should.
The good news for Fickell is that Wisconsin has three very winnable games before the regular-season finale against Minnesota. That should take some of the pressure down for now. But even if the Badgers go 3-0 in that stretch, the season’s defining moment still sits in Week 14, when the Golden Gophers come to Camp Randall.
If Wisconsin loses that game and Minnesota keeps the Axe, Shawn Eichorst will have a major call to make. He’ll have to decide whether the improvement in the win column is enough to justify another year for Fickell and his staff, or whether the repeated failures in rivalry games are enough to clear the way for a fresh start.
The next three weeks matter for bowl positioning and the record. But the game that will define Fickell’s season is still ahead.

Wisconsin Faces A Big Response Test After That Iowa Loss
Coming off a heavy loss to Iowa, Wisconsin now gets a stretch that should tell a lot about where this season can still go. The Badgers have three upcoming games against lower-ranked Big Ten opponents, beginning with Rutgers, and the pressure is on to show a cleaner, more composed response after a rough afternoon.
One question hanging over the next step is how much quarterback Ryan Hopkins might factor into the offense, even though Luke Fickell has not indicated any official change. For Wisconsin, the defense remains the most reliable part of the team and should be central again, especially against a Rutgers attack that is likely to feature AJ Surace at quarterback. Wisconsin Just Made A Quarterback Change Fans Will Debate
An injury has pushed Wisconsin into a quarterback decision that could shape the conversation around the offense heading into Rutgers. True freshman Ryan Hopkins is expected to get the start, giving the Badgers a new look at the most important position on the field while Colton Joseph works through the issue that has him limited.
Joseph is still reportedly available if needed off the bench, which leaves Wisconsin with a familiar but uneasy split in the backfield plan. Hopkins already got a taste of the job when he replaced Joseph late in a recent game, and now he is set for his first career start with the Badgers trying to keep the offense steady through the change. Wisconsin Fans Got The Reassurance They Needed From Mekhi Williams
Mekhi Williams has given Wisconsin fans a reason to breathe a little easier as the calendar turns toward signing day. The four-star safety in the 2027 class remains committed to the Badgers and still plans to put pen to paper next month, a notable development for a program that has seen its share of recruiting battles heat up as bigger-name schools circle.
Williams has drawn plenty of attention from major programs, but he continues to sound locked in on Wisconsin and is still focused on sharpening his game. He also just helped lead his high school team to a district championship, another reminder of why he is viewed as one of the top prospects in Wisconsins 2027 class and a key name to watch as the Badgers try to keep their future class intact.
