Luke Fickell Knows Wisconsin Cant Keep Winning Like This

In a thrilling win over Penn State, Wisconsin's vulnerabilities were exposed, as Luke Fickell highlights the unsustainable turnover troubles and sluggish rushing attack that demand urgent attention.

Wisconsin walked out of its win over Penn State with the kind of result that can hide a few ugly truths. The Badgers got the victory, but Luke Fickell made it clear this week that two areas of the game left plenty to clean up: turnovers and the run game.

The turnover battle was a mess for Wisconsin. The Badgers gave it away three times, and all three turnovers were Colton Joseph interceptions.

According to Karl Winter's interview with Joseph, "Two of his interceptions on Saturday were bad reads, trying to do too much, while one was the right read but a bad throw." Two of those picks directly led to 14 Penn State points, which made the margin even harder to survive.

Penn State, meanwhile, only turned it over once. That left Wisconsin on the wrong end of a 3-1 turnover ratio, the kind of stat that usually buries a team, especially in the Big Ten. Fickell didn’t sugarcoat it.

“We don’t want to try to win that way." Luke Fickell said, "That is not the identity that we want to try to overcome.

I mean, we were minus two in the turnover margin, and we won the game. We don’t want to try to win that way.”

The other issue was just as plain. Wisconsin barely won the rushing battle, finishing with 120 yards to Penn State’s 119. Fickell pointed that out too, and he wasn’t interested in treating it like a positive.

“You know, we only won the rushing battle by one yard. It was 120 to 119."

Luke Fickell explained about his Wisconsin offense, "So, you know, we don’t want to try to win that way. We want to be able to control the line of scrimmage.

We want to be able to take care of the football. We want to be able to create turnovers.

We don’t want to have to overcome those things.”

That lack of a real ground game has been a problem for Wisconsin, which is currently second-to-last in the Big Ten in rushing yards per game. That’s not the identity the program was built around, and it’s not the one Fickell is trying to install.

If you strip out quarterback rushes, the numbers look even rougher for the Badgers. Penn State finished with 96 non-quarterback rushing yards, while Wisconsin managed 81. That’s the kind of imbalance that can’t keep happening if the Badgers want cleaner wins.

The Penn State game was dramatic, but Wisconsin got away with living on the edge in two key areas. Fickell made it obvious that if the Badgers want that success to hold up, both the turnover margin and the rushing battle need to look a lot different going forward.

Wisconsins Two LA Matchups Suddenly Carry Very Different Threats

With Wisconsin working through a demanding Big Ten slate, the trip out to Los Angeles is starting to look less like a single swing through two marquee programs and more like two games with very different levels of danger. The Badgers already have a tough one looming against No. 14 Iowa, and now the other West Coast stops are taking on new meaning as the conference race tightens.

UCLA has surged to 4-0 under new coach Bob Chesney and earned a spot in the Top 25 behind strong play on both sides of the ball, while USC remains a far more complicated read under Lincoln Riley. The Trojans have been drawing criticism for their defense and the fallout from a controversial player incident, and with Washington, Penn State and Wisconsin all on the schedule, the pressure around that matchup is only growing. Wisconsin Now Has A Chance Fans Have Been Waiting On

Wisconsins win over No. 13 Penn State gave the Badgers a resume-building result and pushed them to 3-1, but it still was not enough to get them into the AP Top 25. They landed at No. 26, just outside the poll, which leaves them right on the doorstep of the kind of national recognition fans have been waiting to see again.

Michigan State comes to Madison next, and Wisconsin is favored to handle the Spartans at home. A victory would give the Badgers another chance to strengthen their case and possibly crack the Top 25, turning last weeks breakthrough into something even bigger as the season starts to take shape. Wisconsin Just Earned The Kind Of Respect Fans Will Notice

It gave Luke Fickells group the kind of result that tends to travel, the sort of performance that reminds opponents this is still a physical team capable of responding when things get uncomfortable. After a stretch of frustration, the victory looked like more than a single upset - it looked like a sign of growth.

Pat Fitzgerald noticed, too, and his praise for Fickell and Wisconsin centered on the toughness and resilience the Badgers showed in turning that game around. With Michigan State and Wisconsin now heading toward each other after very different recent outcomes, the matchup carries a little extra weight.
