Luke Fickell’s Wisconsin teams still haven’t solved Iowa, and Halloween brought another ugly reminder. The Badgers were shut out 30-0 by the Hawkeyes, dropping Fickell to 0-4 against Iowa in his Wisconsin tenure and leaving behind a performance that felt even more baffling than the score alone.
This one was supposed to be about Wisconsin’s improvement. The Badgers had just knocked off USC, and wideout Chris Brooks Jr. said afterward that “This team has a sort of different fight that I haven’t felt from past teams."
That line didn’t age well. Against Iowa, Wisconsin looked nothing like a team ready for one of its biggest games of the season, even though the numbers say this group is better than last year’s 37-0 disaster.
The most jarring part of the night came through the air. Iowa quarterback Hank Brown went 20-for-24 for 222 yards and two touchdowns, turning what was billed as a trench battle into a game where the Hawkeyes also shredded Wisconsin’s secondary. Iowa still controlled the line of scrimmage on both sides, but Brown’s efficiency was the surprise that made the loss feel even worse.
Wisconsin’s best offensive spark came from Jaylon Domingeaux, who was the only Badger who really stood out. He caught six passes for 86 yards and delivered a 41-yard grab on Wisconsin’s third drive that briefly gave the offense some life. Based on this game, he looks like the receiver with the best hands in the room.
The turning point came with Wisconsin trying to climb back into it while trailing 10-0. After Domingeaux’s big catch helped fuel a promising drive, the Badgers reached 4th-and-goal from the 1 and went with a sweep to Abu Sama. Iowa stuffed it, Wisconsin turned it over on downs, and a chance to make the game manageable disappeared.
That call summed up the night. Wisconsin never found a rhythm, and the failed 4th-and-goal felt like the cleanest snapshot of a team that was out of answers all game long.
Quarterback play added another layer to the mess. Wisconsin benched Colton Joseph late in the third quarter and turned to true freshman Ryan Hopkins.
Joseph finished 5-of-14 for 90 yards, marking the third straight game in which he didn’t even reach 100 passing yards. Hopkins completed 8-of-13 passes for 93 yards and an interception.
Joseph wasn’t Wisconsin’s biggest issue in this one, but the situation is now serious enough to raise a real quarterback controversy in Madison.
The Badgers now head back to Camp Randall Stadium to face Rutgers, which pushed Michigan for four quarters before dropping to 2-6 overall and 1-4 in the Big Ten. Kickoff time has not been announced, and the game will be broadcast on Big Ten Network.

Wisconsins Iowa Loss Exposed An Offensive Shift Fans Cant Ignore
Wisconsins shutout loss to Iowa did more than bury the Badgers on the scoreboard. It also put a spotlight on an offense that looked noticeably different in how it was deployed, with the snap counts showing a staff searching for answers as the game slipped away. The changes were especially obvious at quarterback, where true freshman Hopkins saw a heavier workload, and along the offensive line, where the right guard spot turned into a week-to-week puzzle.
Those rotation patterns matter because they hint at a broader evaluation underway, not just a one-game adjustment. When an offense is struggling to create anything consistent, every substitution becomes part of the story, and Wisconsins usage against Iowa suggested the coaches were willing to keep moving pieces around in search of a spark. The question now is whether those shifts are the start of a longer-term change or just the latest sign of an offense still trying to find its footing. [Read more 🡒]
BYUs Big 12 Push Suddenly Feels Far Less Secure
The Big 12 race has a way of turning quickly, and BYU is feeling that volatility after a stretch that has made its path look a lot less comfortable than it did only a short time ago. Around college football, results have been swinging wildly from week to week, with rankings shifting and coaching pressure building at several stops, and the Cougars are now part of that same uneasy mix as the season keeps tightening.
For Wisconsin fans, the broader picture matters because it underscores how fragile momentum can be in a crowded conference landscape. Between the changing fortunes at places like Iowa, Minnesota, Oregon, USC, Central Florida, Cincinnati and Texas Tech, the sport is offering a reminder that no team can coast for long, and BYUs push has suddenly become one more storyline that feels far from settled. Wisconsins Quarterback Debate Just Got Harder To Ignore
Wisconsins quarterback situation has become harder to brush aside as the offense keeps searching for a steadier rhythm. Graham Mertz has gone three straight games without topping 100 passing yards, a stretch that has only added to the uncertainty around the position and the way the Badgers are trying to move the ball.
Cade McNamara has seen only limited action so far, but that has only sharpened the question of whether Wisconsin should give him a longer look. With no official changes announced, the Badgers are left in the middle of a familiar but increasingly urgent evaluation, one that could shape how the rest of the season unfolds. [Read more 🡒]
