Lance Mason’s NFL path took another turn almost as soon as it started. After the Seattle Seahawks cut the former Wisconsin tight end last week to make room for fullback Brock Lampe, the Pittsburgh Steelers jumped in and claimed Mason off waivers, sending him to Pittsburgh to get installed.
For Badger fans, the move comes with two layers of interest. On the simplest level, it’s another test for Mason as he tries to carve out a place in the league.
On the more complicated level, there’s the question of what happens if he doesn’t stick in Pittsburgh and the 5-in-5 lawsuit goes through, giving 2022 athletes one more year of eligibility. That opens the door to a possible return to Wisconsin, though there are still plenty of details tied up in that scenario, including whether a UDFA contract would count and whether it would make the deal null and void.
The Steelers had room to make the move after deciding to move on from tight end JJ Galbreath. In a corresponding transaction, Pittsburgh also claimed wide receiver Colton Dowell from the San Francisco 49ers and released Galbreath and A.T. Perry.
Mason hasn’t made much of a statistical mark yet. He didn’t record a stat in preseason Week 1 after arriving fresh, but there’s still a chance he sees action in preseason Week 2.
He’s already shown he can get noticed in camp, too. During training camp, Mason got into a fight with Robert Spears-Jennings, and Steelers reporter Brooke Pryor described it this way: "Fireworks in the final team period of today’s practice.

It’s the kind of thing that happens in camp all the time, and Mason is hardly alone in that regard - Wisconsin has already had a few of its own this year. Still, for a rookie trying to win a roster spot, it’s one way to make an early impression.
And while Mason’s situation drew the spotlight, another former Badger also changed teams. Jackson Acker was released by the Buffalo Bills on Wednesday as they sorted out their fullback depth chart.
With the Seahawks apparently still looking for help at fullback, the possibility of Acker landing there gives the whole situation a neat Wisconsin-to-Seattle twist. If that happened after Mason’s departure opened the door for Lampe, it would be one more full-circle Badger connection to watch.
