Under Luke Fickell, though, that edge hasn’t shown up the way people in Madison are used to seeing it. Eric Mateos is trying to change that.
The Wisconsin offensive line coach went on ESPN Madison and didn’t bother with soft language. He laid out exactly what he wants this group to become, and the message was loud enough to cut through any preseason noise: “They’re going to see some really TOUGH, MEAN, S.O.B.’s for the Badgers," Mateos said.
That line grabbed attention, but the bigger point was what came after it. Mateos made it clear that when fans watch this offensive line, they should feel something they’ve been missing lately: pride. He said the unit is built around toughness and physicality, and he knows Wisconsin supporters don’t just want to watch the line - they want it to be the center of the show.

That’s the kind of tone Wisconsin fans have been waiting for. The program’s identity has always been tied to the trenches, and Mateos is leaning straight into that expectation rather than running from it. The hope is that this group restores some of that familiar Badger feel while still fitting the modern game.
Jeff Grimes is part of that picture too. The source material points to him as someone who seems to understand Wisconsin’s glory days while updating things for the current era on defense. With Grimes and Mateos working together, the idea is that Wisconsin might finally have an offense that feels like Wisconsin again.
The starting five up front still hasn’t been fully revealed, and Mateos is expected to keep the competition going until Game 1.
