Danny ONeil Just Changed Wisconsins Quarterback Battle Again

Wisconsin Badgers' QB Danny O'Neil makes a cautious return to practice, sharing the field with a brand new lineup.

Danny O’Neil is back on the Wisconsin practice field, even if only in a limited role for now.

The Badgers quarterback, who missed the entire offseason while recovering from a season-ending injury suffered midway through last year, made his first appearance in practice last week. Head coach Luke Fickell said O’Neil had just been cleared to handle scout work and run, and that the staff had previously kept him out while he worked his way back.

“Today or yesterday, yesterday might’ve been the first day where he was cleared to be able to do scout work and legitimately be able to take off and run,” Fickell said about O’Neil last week. “We’ve kind of held him out. They said he could do 7-on-7.

“We came into camp, and I just kind of was like, hey, if he’s not able to take off and do all the things in a live setting-ish, we just got to hold him out. Because the greatest thing about Danny is, you got to hold him back from himself.

And so the last 2 days, he’s been able [to] be put in those situations. There’s not as many reps out there for everybody.

And so, he’s, he understands that he’s going to have to use a lot of the mental reps and prepare himself in different ways for when those opportunities come.”

O’Neil’s return comes at a time when Wisconsin’s quarterback room has been completely reshaped. The Badgers added transfers Colton Joseph and Deuce Adams, along with true freshman Ryan Hopkins, to try to strengthen a group that had plenty of issues in 2025.

Billy Edwards, who appeared in only two games, and Hunter Simmons are gone. Carter Smith, the 2025 four-star who finished last season as Wisconsin’s starter, has slipped to No. 4 on the depth chart this offseason after the three newcomers moved ahead of him following strong spring work.

Fickell said O’Neil has handled the situation with maturity while continuing to stay engaged with the team.

“He is as mature as there is, and his ability to handle all the different adversities, his ability to come back out here and want to compete at it and not be [down], you know, I’m gonna say he say he’s ready, but in some ways us holding him to make sure that we don’t put him in a situation that he’s not quite ready for,” Fickell said. “But his ability to be a part of this team and to be a part of the brotherhood and, you know, take a role right now where he’s at and take it really serious. I mean, I got the utmost respect for him.”

Wisconsin Fans Just Got Shawn Eichorsts Tone On Luke Fickell

Shawn Eichorst is already trying to set a different tone around Wisconsin football, even before the 2026 season arrives. The Badgers new athletic director acknowledged the skepticism that has settled in with fans, including the recent drop in ticket sales and overall enthusiasm, and he pushed for a little more patience as the program keeps working toward daily improvement under Luke Fickell.

Eichorst framed the moment as one that calls for unity and optimism, pointing to the effort being put in by the players and coaches while stressing that he is still in the process of evaluating everything around the program. For a fan base that has been waiting for signs that the bigger picture is being addressed, his message was less about instant answers than about laying out a standard and promising a fuller assessment in time. Wisconsin Fall Camp Is Turning Up Names Fans Can't Ignore

Fall camp keeps giving Wisconsin a few names worth filing away, and the early buzz has centered on a trio of players making real ground in practice. Cornerback Fletcher has shown better coverage and drawn positive comments from the staff, while the usual camp churn at defensive line and receiver has started to sort out who is earning more meaningful work as the Badgers keep installing and evaluating.

Nolan Vils, a walk-on who has been climbing the depth chart, has taken a noticeable step in the mix up front, and true freshman receiver Kash Brock has also moved into more advanced reps. Those are the kinds of developments that matter in August, when coaches are still watching for who can handle bigger roles once the pads stay on and the lineup decisions start to get harder. Jake Ferguson And Haley Cavinder Gave Badgers Fans A Fun Debate

Jake Ferguson and Haley Cavinder gave Wisconsin fans a little offseason entertainment when the Cowboys posted a couples challenge featuring the two of them. The format was simple enough, with each answering questions about the others preferences, and it played out like the kind of light social media content that still gives people a reason to stop scrolling and compare notes.

The result was a draw, with both Ferguson and Cavinder getting two of five questions right, which was just enough to fuel the usual debate about who knows whom better. Married in June 2023, they have already taken part in similar challenges before, and this one added another small chapter to a relationship that keeps showing up in the sports and social media spotlight.
