The Wisconsin Badgers have long been a powerhouse in developing offensive line talent, consistently sending players to the NFL. However, in recent years, they've faced some turbulence both on the field and on the sidelines. Frequent changes in the offensive line coaching position have been a significant factor, with the latest shift bringing in Eric Mateos, formerly of the Arkansas Razorbacks, to replace AJ Blazek.
The coaching carousel began in the final year of Paul Chryst's tenure, with Bob Bostad at the helm. Then came Jack Bicknell Jr. during Luke Fickell's first year. Blazek followed for two seasons, and now it's Mateos' turn to lead the charge.
Mateos brings a wealth of experience, having worked alongside offensive coordinator Jeff Grimes at multiple stops over the last decade. This familiarity is expected to be a game-changer for the Badgers.
“He and I go back to him being my GA first at LSU and then my line coach at two other places along the way,” Grimes shared. “We’ve developed a synergy in how we approach blocking schemes and game planning. That shared history should make our offensive strategies more efficient.”
Grimes praised Mateos for his intelligence and creativity, highlighting their collaborative approach to problem-solving. “He’s a tremendous teacher.
He finds ways to make complex information accessible to every player, ensuring they can apply it on the field. That’s where we’re seeing real progress.”
Mateos’ previous success with Arkansas’ rushing attack in 2025, one of the nation’s best, is a promising sign for the Badgers. Wisconsin hopes to regain its dominant rushing identity, which has been elusive in recent years due to offensive experimentation.
The Mateos hire, grounded in his rapport with Grimes, aims to revitalize Wisconsin’s offensive line. If all goes well, the Badgers could once again become a formidable force in college football.
