The Wisconsin Badgers have made a strategic move by securing dual-threat quarterback Colton Joseph from the transfer portal. Joseph, previously with Old Dominion, brings a dynamic skill set that caught the Badgers' attention.
Last season, he threw for 2,624 yards, racking up 21 touchdowns against 10 interceptions, and showcased his prowess as a downfield passer with over 15 yards per completion. However, it's his mobility on the ground that truly sets him apart, having rushed for over 1,000 yards and achieving double-digit rushing touchdowns for the second consecutive year.
One standout performance came against the Indiana Hoosiers, where Joseph dazzled with 179 rushing yards and two touchdowns. Now stepping up to the Big 10, Joseph faces new challenges, particularly in maintaining his health in one of the most physically demanding conferences. The Badgers have had their share of quarterback injuries, with starters sidelined in each of the past three seasons.
So, how does Wisconsin plan to leverage Joseph's dual-threat capabilities while keeping him safe? Offensive coordinator Jeff Grimes shed some light on their approach. “When you recruit athletic quarterbacks, like Colton and the others we have, you embrace the added dimension they bring to the game,” Grimes explained.
He emphasized the importance of balancing Joseph's exposure to contact. “Some quarterbacks are naturally more durable or elusive, managing to avoid direct hits. We aim to use strategies that protect them, like utilizing the sideline to help them get out of bounds or designing plays in the red zone where they can score with less risk of injury.”
Grimes made it clear that while they understand the inherent risks, the goal isn't to treat Joseph like a running back. Instead, it's about smart play-calling and maximizing his unique talents without overexposing him to unnecessary hits. The Badgers seem ready to adapt their game plan to make the most of Joseph's abilities, aiming for a season where his dual-threat nature can shine without compromising his health.
