Wisconsin’s running back room took a harsh turn when Gideon Ituka was left off the official 2026 roster, and the latest update from Luke Fickell suggests the situation is far more serious than a standard setback.
Ituka had only just started to carve out a role in the Badgers’ offense. In his first real collegiate action last season, he logged 60 carries for 255 yards before going down against Indiana.
His best outing came against Oregon, when he handled the ball 21 times for 85 yards. Before the injury, Wisconsin looked like it had a promising duo to build around with Darrion Dupree and Ituka.
That picture changed quickly.
Speaking to local media members ahead of his television appearance later for the Big Ten Media Days kickoff, Fickell gave a short but sobering update. He said he believes Ituka may never be fully cleared for contact again, which would effectively end the young back’s career.
Even with that uncertainty, Ituka remains around the program. He is still working at the facilities in Madison and has stayed connected to the Wisconsin Badgers despite not being on the official roster.
There is still no clear path back to the field, and the recovery timeline remains unknown because of the severity of the injury.
Wisconsin has seen a similar situation before with former running back Chez Mellusi. Mellusi was a dangerous player when healthy, but a series of breaks, fractures, and tears slowed his career before he ultimately stepped away from football to focus on his health, while leaving open the possibility of a return later.
For Ituka, the next step may be time away from the game entirely while he tries to heal. But with an injury this serious, there is no exact timetable and no guarantee of a comeback.
