Wisconsin’s offseason makeover has gone well beyond the depth chart. After a disastrous 2025 season that went down as the program’s worst in 35 years, the Badgers have tried to clean up everything from facilities to staffing to coaching. But the quieter change inside the building may matter just as much: the locker room feels different.
That’s the sense coming from players who were around last year and can tell the contrast immediately. The message isn’t about talent alone. It’s about whether the group is actually pulling in the same direction.
“Everybody competing. Everybody all in," fifth-year defensive tackle Charles Perkins said.
Perkins didn’t stop there. He said the current group has a different kind of bond, one that includes the newcomers Wisconsin brought in through the portal.
"Last year, everybody was all in but this year, this a special group. We got guys that came out the transfer portal that came in all in and we all a brotherhood.
Everybody talk to everybody. This defensive line (is closer) than last year’s defensive line."
Perkins did soften that a bit by saying last year’s team was all in too, but the larger point was hard to miss: this year’s defensive line, and by extension this roster, feels more connected. The way he described it, the transfers didn’t just arrive as additions. They fit into the room right away.
That theme has come up before. Wisconsin players have already pointed to the portal class not only as an upgrade in ability, but as a boost in personality and chemistry.
“When you bring in guys like that, who are great football players and great dudes as well…the biggest thing is obviously great players but also great dudes, and I think that when we can mold around guys that we love to play with and by, I think that’s what’s gonna propel our defense this year," linebacker Tommy Heiberger said.
Wisconsin added 33 players and a dozen or more starters through the transfer portal this winter, and the talent haul was clearly necessary. But just as important was finding people who could strengthen the locker room instead of fragmenting it. Based on what Perkins, Heiberger and others have said, the Badgers believe they’ve done that.
