Arizona Suddenly Has A Real AP Poll Problem

Halloween weekend shake-ups promise a dramatic reshuffling in the AP Top 25 Poll, spotlighting unexpected victories and potential comebacks.

Halloween weekend turned the AP Top 25 into a mess, and USC was right at the center of it.

The unranked Trojans delivered the loudest shock of Saturday, rolling past No. 2 Ohio State in Southern California and blowing up the top of the poll picture.

USC is now in line for a big jump, with a climb as high as the top 15 looking likely. The Buckeyes, meanwhile, are headed for a fall, though exactly how far they slide is still unclear.

That wasn’t the only shakeup. A cluster of ranked teams lost, and the damage may be felt just as much near the bottom of the poll as at the top.

No. 19 SMU, No.

22 Arizona, No. 24 Oklahoma State and Wisconsin all went down, while Northwestern also took a hit after losing to Oregon.

Oregon’s win over the No. 20 Wildcats in Autzen Stadium was one of the weekend’s more important results for the rankings.

The Ducks, who had already fallen out of the AP Poll, now have a real shot to climb back in. Iowa is in the same conversation after pounding Wisconsin 30-0 at home, a result that came after the Hawkeyes had lost to Minnesota.

USC, Oregon and Iowa all have a path back into the rankings, though nothing is locked in for the Ducks or Hawkeyes.

Arizona nearly pulled off another upset in the ranked chaos, but No. 13 Texas Tech steadied itself and pulled away with 24 points in the second half to beat the Wildcats. That loss puts Arizona in danger of dropping out of the poll altogether.

Georgia also handled its business in one of Saturday’s ranked matchups, beating No. 17 Florida 27-8 in Atlanta, Georgia. The Bulldogs are expected to move up to No. 2, while Florida’s exact drop remains one of the bigger questions in the new poll.

At the same time, the door is open for new names to enter. New Mexico, sitting at 7-1, is a strong candidate after surviving San Jose State.

If Arizona or Florida falls out completely, that would create even more room for fresh teams in Sunday’s AP release. South Carolina could also be one of the surprise beneficiaries after receiving-votes teams like Cincinnati and Oregon State lost.

There’s also a strange wrinkle at the bottom of the rankings: Oregon’s win came against a ranked opponent, but the Ducks were still listed outside the poll in the source’s projected order. The same source also noted that Oregon could be back in after falling out entirely, especially after taking down Northwestern.

The quarterback situation adds another layer to the Oregon-Ohio State fallout. Buckeyes quarterback Julian Sayin is out indefinitely, and Ducks quarterback Dante Moore is not expected to return this season. Oregon has had trouble with backup quarterbacks, and Ohio State’s offense struggled to reach the end zone against USC with quarterback Luke Fahey leading the way.

The source’s projected AP Top 25 listed Miami at No. 1, followed by Georgia, Indiana, Notre Dame and Utah, with USC at No. 14 and Oregon at No. 23 in one version of the forecast. Another projected order had Ohio State at No.

2, Georgia at No. 3, Indiana at No. 4 and Florida at No. 17, with SMU, Northwestern, Arizona, Oklahoma State and Wisconsin filling out the lower spots.

This article will be updated upon the release of the AP Top 25 Poll.

Wisconsins Rivalry Loss Just Put One Badgers Problem In Plain Sight

Wisconsins setback against Iowa did more than dent the standings. It put a spotlight on the kind of issues that can linger long after a rivalry game ends. Sebastian Cheeks pointed to a lack of readiness and effort from teammates, and that fits with the broader concern around this group: the Badgers have shown enough early success to raise expectations, but not enough consistency to make anyone comfortable.

Luke Fickell has already warned about the danger of complacency, and this loss made that warning feel a lot less theoretical. The next step for Wisconsin is not just about correcting a game plan or cleaning up execution, but about reestablishing the grit and physicality that have to define the program. Until the culture and motivation sharpen up, the Badgers are going to keep inviting the same questions. [Read more 🡒]

Ohio State Just Created A Ranking Debate Fans Wont Ignore

USCs path through the AP Top 25 has already taken a sharp turn, and Wisconsin is part of the reason why. The Trojans dropped out of the poll after losing to the Badgers, then turned around and beat No. 2 Ohio State at home, a result that immediately changed the conversation around both teams and sent ripples through the rankings.

Ohio States offense never looked settled without its regular quarterback, and the Buckeyes paid for it when the latest poll came out. With several other ranked teams also winning and losing, the standings shifted in a way that made the top of the poll feel anything but stable, and Wisconsins earlier win over USC now sits inside a much bigger debate about what it all means. Wisconsins Iowa Loss Exposed An Offensive Shift Fans Cant Ignore

Wisconsins 30-0 loss to Iowa did more than leave the Badgers searching for answers on the scoreboard. It also laid bare a noticeable shift in how the offense is being deployed, with the snap counts offering a clearer picture of who is being leaned on and where the staff is still trying to find something that works. The result was an attack that never found much rhythm, even as the rotations around it kept changing.

One of the biggest takeaways was the heavier usage of true freshman Hopkins at quarterback, a sign the staff is willing to keep exploring options there. Up front, the right guard spot turned into a revolving door, another indication that the line is still unsettled as Wisconsin tries to piece together a functional run game and pass protection. For a team that needs stability, the numbers from this one suggest the search is still very much on. [Read more 🡒]
