Jets Regroup After Shootout Loss, Prep for Red Wings Test
The Jets are trying to shake off a tough 2-1 shootout loss to the Panthers as they turn the page and prepare for a big test against a sharp-looking Red Wings squad. With Detroit coming off a 4-3 overtime loss to Minnesota, both teams are looking to bounce back and rediscover their rhythm.
Roster Moves: Zhilkin and Phillips Sent to Moose
Before the Jets hit the ice for an optional skate, the club announced it had loaned forward Danny Zhilkin and defenseman Isaak Phillips to the Manitoba Moose. The timing makes sense - the Moose are in action tonight against the Grand Rapids Griffins, Detroit’s AHL affiliate and currently the top team in the league. It’s a good opportunity for both young players to get meaningful minutes in a high-level matchup.
Zhilkin and Phillips were both on the ice for the morning skate at Hockey For All Centre and spoke afterward about the move. While the loan might seem like a step back at a glance, it’s more about keeping them in game shape and giving them a chance to stay sharp in a competitive environment.
Skate Notes: Light Group, Comrie in Net
With the skate being optional, it was a smaller group out there. Logan Stanley, Elias Salomonsson, Tanner Pearson, Morgan Barron, Gustav Nyquist, and Cole Koepke were among the skaters who took part. Between the pipes, it was Eric Comrie getting in some solo work.
Optional skates like this are often less about systems and more about maintenance - staying loose, getting some touches, and working on individual details. For a team that’s coming off a tight, low-scoring game and has another fast, skilled opponent on deck, keeping bodies fresh is key.
Looking Ahead: A Big Challenge in Detroit
Next up, the Jets face a Red Wings team that’s been one of the more consistent groups in the East. Detroit has been getting strong contributions across the lineup and plays with pace - something the Jets will need to match if they want to come out with points. After a frustrating result against Florida, this is a chance for the Jets to reset and respond.
The pieces are there - it’s just about putting it all together.
