Milan - As Team Canada gears up for the gold medal showdown against the USA, the lineup is facing some crucial decisions. Sidney Crosby's status remains uncertain, while Josh Morrissey is officially sidelined with an upper-body injury.
Team Canada’s head coach, Jon Cooper, confirmed that Morrissey, a key defensive player, won't be hitting the ice. Despite efforts to recover after being injured in the Olympic opener, Morrissey just couldn’t make the cut.
“We want Josh in this game; his puck-moving skills are vital,” Cooper shared. “But if you’re not physically ready, it’s about putting the team first.
This team has shown incredible selflessness, prioritizing the flag above all else. If a player can’t give their best, they step aside for the greater good.”
Morrissey’s absence is a tough pill to swallow, especially after missing last year’s 4 Nations Face-Off championship game due to illness. “It’s heartbreaking for him,” Cooper noted. “He’s an exceptional player and person.”
Meanwhile, Crosby, who missed the semifinal win over Finland, remains a game-time decision. Cooper plans to meet with him to assess his readiness. Crosby did participate in a closed practice session, fueling hope for his return.
“We’ll see how he’s feeling,” Cooper said. “He’s not going to risk his health or the team’s success. We’d love to have him, but the decision will be made with caution.”
Cooper also dismissed the idea of having Crosby on the bench merely for inspiration, emphasizing the need for every player to be fully capable of contributing on the ice. “It’s too important to have someone just for morale. We need players ready to step up if needed, and Crosby wouldn’t want it any other way.”
As the anticipation builds, Team Canada is focused on making strategic decisions to secure victory, embodying the spirit of teamwork and resilience.
