Lightning Are Sending A Clear Kucherov Message As Trade Talk Swirls

Amid speculation and team challenges, strong leadership decisions hold sway over player moves and coaching stability in the NHL.

The Tampa Bay Lightning aren’t budging on Nikita Kucherov, at least not yet.

According to Darren Dreger on TSN, teams have been calling, but general manager Julian BriseBois is still holding firm and saying he’s not interested in moving Kucherov. Dreger also pointed out that it would be hard to imagine the Lightning letting a player with Kucherov’s status, resume and impact leave the organization for nothing.

“And we can see the Lightning as being a contending team, but is that going to stay that way up until the midway mark of the regular season? What if there’s a dip after Christmas? Is BriseBois going to reconsider that position?

It seems unthinkable that the Lightning would allow a player of this status, of this magnitude, of this level of resume to walk away from the organization for nothing.”

There’s also no sign that Kucherov is working from a short list of preferred destinations. Pierre LeBrun reported that Kucherov hasn’t even taken a deep dive into possible landing spots, and that this may be more of a July 1st conversation than a March 1st trade deadline issue.

That lines up with what BriseBois already told Kucherov directly. LeBrun said the Lightning GM not only stated in a message that he has no intention of trading him, but also told Kucherov face-to-face in a meeting Friday in Nashville that he does not intend on trading him.

Elsewhere, the Winnipeg Jets are dealing with a rough stretch, but Scott Arniel’s job is not in immediate danger. Winnipeg entered last night winless in nine, and there have been calls for a coaching change, mostly from the fan base and the media. Still, Dreger said management and ownership are not stepping in at this point.

“So, even though there are calls for a coaching change, mostly from the fan base, and the media talking about it, as they probably should locally, I don’t believe that removing Arniel as head coach is on the radar just yet.”

Jets End Nine-Game Skid With A Comeback Fans Will Never Forget

After nine straight losses, the kind of stretch that can wear on a room and a fan base alike, the Jets finally found a way to turn a night around in a hurry against Montreal. Winnipeg trailed deep into regulation before suddenly catching fire in the closing minutes, piling up four goals in the final 2:39 just to force overtime and give the building a jolt it had been waiting for.

Kyle Connor led the late surge with two goals, while Morgan Barron also chipped in as the Jets erased the deficit in dramatic fashion. Winnipeg finished with a 47-22 shot advantage, a sign that the pressure had been building long before the comeback finally arrived, and the result offered a much-needed release after a frustrating skid that had seemed to drag on forever. Connor Hellebuyck Knows His Winnipeg Return Could Get Emotional

Connor Hellebuycks first trip back to Winnipeg is shaping up as one of the more interesting side stories on the Jets calendar. After being traded to the New Jersey Devils on Oct. 23 in a deal that brought Winnipeg multiple players, draft picks and rights, the goaltender has already moved on to his new team and made his first NHL appearance for New Jersey. His exit followed an unpaid suspension after he skipped training camp, closing a tense chapter for both sides.

Now the focus shifts to what happens when the Devils come through town in November. Jets players and management have already addressed the trades resolution and what it meant for the locker room, but the emotional part of the story is still waiting to play out in front of the Winnipeg crowd. For Hellebuyck, the night figures to carry extra weight, and for the Jets, it will be another reminder of how quickly a season can change course. [Read more 🡒]

Blue Jackets Send A Clear Message With Latest Roster Shuffle

The waiver wire has already started to reshape the edges of the roster picture, and for Winnipeg it comes with a familiar name in Brad Lambert. The Jets forward was waived earlier in the week and has now cleared, keeping him in the organizations plans for the moment as teams around the league continue to sort through their depth options.

Columbus added to that churn by placing defenseman Emil Andrae and forward Danton Heinen on waivers, a move that signals the Blue Jackets are willing to make some hard calls on the back end and up front. Andrae had suited up in five games and picked up two assists, while Heinen had gone 10 games without scoring, and the latest shuffle only adds another layer to a market that Winnipeg is watching closely.
