The Winnipeg Jets have more than enough star power up front, but the scoring from the rest of the lineup has gone missing. With Kevin Cheveldayoff looking for a way to kick-start a sluggish attack, a few trade options around the league could make sense if Winnipeg decides to act.
The biggest issue is obvious: the Jets’ top four forwards have carried far too much of the load. Mark Scheifele, Kyle Connor, Gabe Vilardi and Cole Perfetti are still producing, but the supporting cast has not kept pace.
Winnipeg has scored just 28 goals as a team this season, tied for fourth-fewest in the NHL. Since the Jets’ Presidents Trophy win, those four forwards have accounted for 135 of Winnipeg’s 257 goals, a total that sits among the league’s bottom five over that span.
One possible target is Bryan Rust. The 34-year-old winger may be on the back end of his career, but he remains a dangerous scorer.
Rust has three goals and two assists for five points in seven games this season, and before that he put together back-to-back 65-point campaigns. Even with injuries interrupting stretches of his career, he has still managed 45 or more points in six of the last seven years.
A move for Rust would be bold, but the fit is easy to see. He has no trade protection and comes with a $5.125 million cap hit, which is manageable for a player with his track record.
If the Penguins keep trending the wrong way, with the third-worst record in the East, they could start selling off pieces for future assets. That would open the door for Winnipeg to pounce and add a proven top-six threat.
Alex Laferriere would bring a different kind of appeal. He is younger than Rust, carries more upside and also has no trade protection. His contract is a strong one, with a $4.1 million cap hit this season and next.
The Chatham, New Jersey native has shown a 45-point middle-six profile and may have even more in the tank. He has nine points in 11 games so far this season, and he can line up at center or wing. That kind of flexibility could give Winnipeg a long-term option in the middle six rather than just a short-term fix.
Then there is Ivan Miroshnichenko, a buy-low swing with a much smaller price tag. The Capitals are looking to move on from their former 20th overall pick after only 55 NHL games, which could give the Jets a chance to get involved at a lower cost.
Miroshnichenko is 22, from Russia, and still on his entry-level deal, so the cap hit would be minimal. The bigger question is what Washington would want back, with the source pointing to a return that could resemble the Egor Chinakhov deal between the Columbus Blue Jackets and Pittsburgh Penguins, where Pittsburgh sent a depth forward and two mid-round picks.
The production has not been there yet. Miroshnichenko has six goals and eight assists for 14 points in his career, and even with top-line minutes at times in Washington this season, he has struggled to finish chances. Still, a change of scenery could be exactly what he needs, and Winnipeg would be betting on the upside if it took that shot.

Moose Suddenly Face A Scoring Concern Fans Can't Ignore
The Manitoba Moose walked into Milwaukee with a decent amount of puck possession and still came away empty, falling 3-0 to the Admirals in a game that turned into their first shutout loss of the season. It also marked their first back-to-back losses, a small but notable jolt for a club that had been building early momentum before the offense ran dry.
Manitoba still managed to outshoot Milwaukee, but the finishing touch was missing and the power play never found a way to break through. After opening the season with a strong record, the Moose are suddenly facing a scoring concern that is hard to overlook, especially with chances piling up and the goals not following. [Read more 🡒]
Lightning Get Timely Boost As Losing Skid Starts To Sting
Tampa Bay is getting some help back at a useful time, with Victor Hedman set to rejoin the lineup for the game against the Jets after sitting out. Brandon Hagel is also expected to be available, giving the Lightning a better chance to steady themselves after dropping their last two and trying to get back on track against a Winnipeg team that will be watching closely for any signs of a bounce-back.
The roster picture is not completely clean, though, with Zemgus Girgensons listed day-to-day as Tampa Bay sorts through the edges of its forward group. For the Jets, the matchup carries the usual test of handling a deep, experienced opponent when its core pieces are back in place, especially in a game where the Lightning are looking to turn a short skid into a quick reset. Jets Fans Have New Reasons To Watch The Moose Right Now
The Manitoba Moose head into one of their final road tests of the season Tuesday night against the Milwaukee Admirals, with coverage starting at 6:45 p.m. CDT, and there are plenty of Winnipeg-connected reasons to keep an eye on them. Evan Nause has quickly given the lineup a jolt after being recalled, while Danny Zhilkin and Noah Gregor have also been among the more notable contributors for Manitoba this season.
Thomas Milics recent milestone only adds to the appeal of watching this group closely, especially for Jets fans tracking the organizations next wave of depth. The Moose have had some encouraging individual developments lately, and this stretch on the road gives them another chance to show how those pieces fit together as the season winds down.
