The Jets wrapped up a solid eight-game homestand with a narrow 4-3 shootout loss to the Predators, posting a respectable 5-2-1 record over the stretch. Now, they're hitting the road, starting a three-game trip in Boston against the Bruins.
With 15 games left in the season, the Jets find themselves just four points shy of a wildcard spot. Facing the 37-23-8 Bruins, who are clinging to their own wildcard position, the Jets knew this matchup was crucial.
The Jets kept their line combinations steady, featuring Alex Iafallo on the top line and Gabriel Vilardi on the second. Isak Rosen, alongside Jonathan Toews and Gustav Nyquist, anchored the third line, while Cole Koepke, Morgan Barron, and Brad Lambert rounded out the fourth.
On defense, Josh Morrissey and Dylan DeMelo led the top pairing, with Elias Salomonsson and Dylan Samberg on the second, and Haydn Fleury with Jacob Bryson on the third. Connor Hellebuyck, continuing his role as the primary netminder post-Olympics, started in goal.
The Jets were missing four key players due to injuries: Neal Pionk, Colin Miller, Nino Niederreiter, and Vladislav Namestnikov. Hellebuyck entered the game with a 17-18-10 record, a 2.76 GAA, and a .900 SV%.
1st Period
The Jets came out with energy, but a tripping penalty on Gustav Nyquist gave the Bruins an early power play, which they couldn't capitalize on. Shortly after, the Jets had their own power play opportunity but failed to score.
The first period was largely even until David Pastrnak broke the deadlock with just over five minutes left. After a failed clearance by the Jets, Pastrnak pounced and buried his 27th goal of the season, putting the Bruins ahead.
The period ended with the Bruins leading in shots, 13-9.
2nd Period
The second period saw no penalties, but the Bruins continued to press. Six minutes in, a misplay by Hellebuyck behind the net led to Lukas Reichel, making his Bruins debut, scoring on a loose puck.
The Jets struggled to respond, and with less than two minutes remaining, Viktor Arvidsson found the net after a chaotic play in front of Hellebuyck, extending the Bruins' lead to 3-0. The Jets were outshot 21-16 by the end of the period, needing a big push in the third.
3rd Period
The final period didn't start well for the Jets, as Pavel Zacha scored early, assisted by Viktor Arvidsson and Casey Mittelstadt, making it 4-0. The Jets, however, managed to break the shutout with Jonathan Toews scoring his ninth of the season on a power play, thanks to a deflection from a Salomonsson point shot.
Despite another power play opportunity, the Jets couldn't close the gap. The Bruins sealed the game with two late goals from Fraser Minten and Jonathan Aspirot, resulting in a 6-1 final score.
The Bruins outshot the Jets 28-24, showcasing their offensive depth.
