The Jets have made a strategic move by recalling defense prospect Alfons Freij from his loan at Timrå IK in the Swedish Hockey League, sending him to AHL Manitoba to wrap up the season. Timrå finished 12th in the SHL, missing out on postseason play but avoiding relegation.
Freij, a promising 20-year-old, was picked 37th overall in the 2024 draft. He initially honed his skills with the Växjö Lakers’ under-20 team before being loaned to IF Björkloven in Sweden's second-tier league. His professional debut came with Timrå last summer after signing a two-year contract.
Despite not being a first-round pick, Freij signed an entry-level deal with Winnipeg. The NHL's agreement with the SHL required him to be offered back to his Swedish team before heading to the AHL, a move all parties embraced to further his development in Europe.
Standing at 6’1″ and weighing 198 pounds, Freij was recognized as one of the top skaters among defenders in his draft class. His stats with Timrå-six goals, 11 points, and a -6 rating over 42 games-might not seem striking, but young defenders in the SHL often fly under the radar statistically. His performance at the World Juniors, however, was stellar, contributing seven assists and a +6 rating as Sweden clinched gold.
Ranked as the #7 prospect in Winnipeg’s system last summer, Freij is expected to climb higher in the rankings this year. Some prospects ahead of him have struggled in the AHL, but Freij's experience in Europe positions him as a more polished player. While Manitoba's recent track record in developing talent might raise eyebrows, Freij's professional journey overseas gives him a solid foundation compared to those transitioning directly from junior hockey.
