There’s a chance the Winnipeg Jets and Connor Hellebuyck put off his physical until a later date, a move that would keep the focus on the team’s Heritage Classic on Sunday, TSN Hockey Insider Darren Dreger reported Thursday.
That timing matters because Hellebuyck’s suspension is scheduled to end Friday, and a physical is required before he can be added back to the active roster.
Even with the suspension about to expire, the situation around Hellebuyck remains murky. On Early Trading Thursday morning on TSN, TSN Hockey Insider Chris Johnston said the door is still open to more behind-the-scenes movement, but a resolution has been hard to find.
“The good news if you’re Connor Hellebuyck is this is the last day, Thursday, that he’s under suspension,” TSN Hockey Insider Chris Johnston said. “So, the tap runs dry in terms of the amount of money that he’s giving up.
“The focus from the Jets organization has entirely been on trying to find a trade to bring an end to this Hellebuyck situation. But as we know, that’s not something that has been easy to do so far.
These trade discussions have gone back several months, a long period of time, and they’ve yet to find a deal. There’s still a lot of discussion going on behind the scenes about what this means for Hellebuyck.
But there is a sense, and I don’t think anyone expects to see him show up in Winnipeg, but we wait here as this suspension ticks down and is soon to be lifted.”
Hellebuyck told Jets management he was unhappy with the team’s direction at the end of the 2025-26 campaign, then made a public trade request during the offseason months later.
Since then, the two sides have been stuck. Hellebuyck has not reported, and the Jets suspended him for that refusal.
Winnipeg has kept moving, and the results have been solid enough through the uncertainty. The Jets are off to a 4-3-2 start without the three-time Vezina Trophy winner in net.
“We want guys that want to be here,” Cole Perfetti said after practice on Monday. “If [Hellebuyck] comes back and shows that he wants to be a part of this, and recommits to this group, then that’s obviously good news.”
Head coach Scott Arniel was asked Monday what might happen once the suspension ends Friday, but he didn’t offer much beyond the team’s current uncertainty.
“It’s all unknown right now for all of us,” Arniel said after practice Monday. “Chevy’s handling that, he’s dealing with that stuff…until [Hellebuyck] shows up here, or whatever may happen, or a trade happens, or whatever that is, it’s hard to talk about.”

Cole Perfetti Has Given Jets Fans A Reason To Appreciate His Rise
Cole Perfetti is about to reach another marker in a career that has steadily moved forward with the Jets, a reminder of how far the young forward has come since arriving as one of the organizations most closely watched prospects. He has already topped 100 assists and 65 goals, production that has helped turn him from promising talent into a player Winnipeg can count on in a growing role.
Scott Arniel has made clear that both Perfetti and Mario Ferraro deserve credit for the way they have developed into NHL regulars, even if their paths have looked very different. Ferraros road has been built mostly in San Jose before landing in Winnipeg, while Perfettis rise has unfolded in real time for Jets fans, who now get to watch another milestone pass as the season keeps moving. Hellebuyck Situation Puts Jets Fans On Edge Entering A Huge Weekend
With the calendar turning toward a huge weekend, the Jets are still dealing with the lingering uncertainty around Connor Hellebuyck. His suspension ends Friday, but the situation around the veteran goalie has not settled the way Winnipeg fans would have hoped, leaving the team in an awkward holding pattern as it tries to sort out its next move.
Behind the scenes, the trade discussions that have stretched on for months have yet to produce a deal, and that unfinished business is only adding to the unease. For a team that wants clarity in the crease and a clean path into the stretch drive, the lack of resolution around Hellebuyck is becoming its own storyline, even as other NHL names, like Montreal's Nick Suzuki and Detroit's Dylan Larkin, make headlines for very different reasons. Canadiens Still Loom In A Trade Situation That May Not Be Closed
Trade chatter around Connor Hellebuyck has not gone away, even with the focus around the Heritage Classic pulling attention in another direction. The Jets are still working through a situation that has stretched beyond the usual quick turnaround, and the timing of any next steps may be shaped by the event itself as much as by the market for the goalie.
Meanwhile, the broader trade picture keeps shifting around Winnipegs orbit. Dylan Larkins list of possible destinations has grown, though Montreal still is not on it for now, and the Red Wings are reportedly taking a close look at the Canadiens as a possible partner. Pittsburghs slump only adds another layer, since a sell-off there could put more veteran names into circulation and keep the market moving in ways the Jets will be watching closely. [Read more 🡒]
