Jets at the Olympics: Strong Starts, Tough Breaks, and Teammates Set to Collide
Four Winnipeg Jets players hit the Olympic ice on Thursday, and if Day 1 is any indication, they came ready to represent. From dominant wins to injury concerns, here’s how it all unfolded - and what’s coming next.
Niederreiter, Hellebuyck, Connor Shine in Opening Games
Nino Niederreiter and Team Switzerland kicked things off with a convincing 4-0 win over France. The veteran forward played his role well, helping Switzerland control the pace and stay disciplined in all three zones. It wasn’t flashy, but it was efficient - just the kind of hockey that wins in tournament play.
Meanwhile, over on Team USA, Connor Hellebuyck and Kyle Connor helped the Americans cruise past Latvia with a 5-1 victory. Hellebuyck looked sharp from the jump, turning away 17 of 18 shots.
It wasn’t a high-volume night for the Jets netminder, but he was locked in when called upon - calm, composed, and in full control. Kyle Connor added his usual offensive spark, helping drive the attack and keeping Latvia’s defense on its heels.
Morrissey, Canada Roll - But Not Without Concern
Josh Morrissey and Team Canada also opened their tournament with a statement win, blanking Czechia 5-0. The Canadians looked every bit the powerhouse they’re expected to be, and Morrissey was a key part of that early on.
But in the second period, the Jets defenseman left the game and didn’t return. There was no update following the game, so his status heading into today’s matchup remains unclear.
That’s no small storyline. Canada faces Switzerland next - meaning Morrissey could be lining up against his Jets teammate Niederreiter.
That’s assuming he’s healthy enough to go. Puck drop is set for 2:10 PM CST, and all eyes will be on whether No. 44 is back in the lineup.
Moose Return to Action
Back in Winnipeg, the Manitoba Moose are back on the ice today as they prepare for a four-game homestand, starting with the Calgary Wranglers tomorrow. After a stretch on the road, this is a key opportunity for the Moose to build some momentum in front of their home crowd. We’ll have more from practice as the team ramps up.
Prospect Watch: Kieron Walton Keeps Rolling
Jets prospect Kieron Walton - Winnipeg’s sixth-round pick in 2024 - had himself a night in the OHL. The Peterborough forward racked up four points (2 goals, 2 assists) and was named First Star of the Game in a win.
Walton’s been trending upward this season, and performances like this are exactly what you want to see from a late-round pick. He’s not just filling the stat sheet - he’s making a real impact.
More from Hellebuyck: Locked In and Laser-Focused
If you haven’t already, check out the recent feature on Connor Hellebuyck and his commitment to the craft. The Jets’ top goaltender dives into his preparation, mindset, and what it takes to stay at the top of his game - especially on the international stage. It’s a great look at the work behind the scenes from one of the NHL’s elite.
Up Next
With Canada vs. Switzerland on tap today, we could see a pair of Jets teammates go head-to-head - if Morrissey is cleared to play.
And as the Olympic tournament heats up, so does the spotlight on Winnipeg’s international contingent. Stay tuned.
