Jets Special Teams Problem Is Getting Harder For Fans To Ignore

Despite a valiant effort from captain Adam Lowry, the Jets' special teams woes leave them struggling to find a breakthrough in their intensifying losing streak.

The Winnipeg Jets’ skid kept rolling Sunday night, and the special teams issues were once again front and center in a 5-1 loss to the Panthers in Winnipeg.

It was the Jets’ sixth straight defeat, dropping them to 0-4-2, and the game was effectively out of reach before the first period was halfway done. Florida scored three goals in a span of 2 minutes and 51 seconds, with the first two coming 1:15 apart and the third following 1:36 later. Two of those goals came on the power play.

The Jets did get one bright moment when captain Adam Lowry scored in the second period. That goal moved him into a tie with former captain Thomas Steen for second on the all-time Jets list with 13 shorthanded goals. Based on the source material, 17 would likely be the number that ends his career in that spot, since Doug Smail’s total of 25 looks out of reach.

Any hope of a push back from Winnipeg was quickly snuffed out, though. Florida answered with its third power-play goal of the night on the same man advantage, stretching the lead to 4-1 and shutting the door on any comeback attempt.

The Panthers added one more goal before it was over, piling on late and making the final score look even harsher.

The Jets are now set to practice before heading to Tampa Bay to begin a difficult four-game road trip. Tomorrow’s Morning Papers are scheduled for 7 AM CST, followed by the Practice Report.

Coyotes Fans Should Watch This Sudden Goalie Situation In The West

The Jets are still waiting on one of their most important blue-line pieces, and the latest update offered at least a small step forward. Josh Morrissey will travel with Winnipeg on its upcoming road trip after missing seven games with an upper-body injury, giving the club a chance to see how he responds once the team is back on the road and back in game rhythm.

It is still unclear when Morrissey will be ready to return, which leaves Winnipeg with a familiar wait-and-see feel at a key point in the schedule. For a Jets team that relies heavily on his minutes and puck-moving ability, simply having him around the group is encouraging, but the real question is whether this trip finally brings him closer to playing again. Jets Depth Is Already Being Tested In One Key Spot

The Manitoba Moose are back in action with a morning game against the Chicago Wolves, and the early start comes with a familiar sort of AHL urgency for Winnipegs organization. Brayden Yager has settled back in nicely since returning to the Moose, and Henry Thrun has been one of the steadier producers on the blue line, giving the farm club a few useful signs as it tries to keep things moving in the right direction.

Even so, the bigger storyline is the one bubbling just above the AHL level. Winnipegs recall of Elias Salomonsson left another opening on the Moose defense, and the club moved quickly to bring in Jack Matier on a professional tryout agreement. For a depth chart that is already being asked to absorb change, the next few days should offer a good look at how much flexibility the Jets have in reserve. [Read more 🡒]

Panthers Look Dangerous For One Big Reason After Jets Rout

Floridas 5-1 win over Winnipeg had the kind of early bite that can change the tone of a matchup before it ever settles in. Carter Verhaeghe was the spark, striking twice on the power play, while Matthew Tkachuk kept feeding the attack with four assists as the Panthers grabbed control quickly and never really let it slip.

The Jets did at least get a response from Adam Lowry, whose short-handed goal survived an immediate review by league officials in Toronto, but it only offered a brief jolt in a game Florida was already steering its way. With the teams set to meet again later in the week, Winnipeg will be left sorting out how to slow a Panthers club that looked comfortable dictating the pace from the start. [Read more 🡒]
