Jets Skid Gets More Frustrating After Another Late Collapse Vs Panthers

Anton Lundell's breakout performance powers the Florida Panthers to another commanding victory over the struggling Winnipeg Jets.

Anton Lundell waited a long time for his first hat trick, and when it finally arrived Friday night, it came in a burst that finished off the Winnipeg Jets.

Lundell scored the final two goals in the last seven minutes, Seth Jones chipped in a goal and two assists, and the Florida Panthers rolled to a 5-2 win over Winnipeg in Sunrise, Fla. Lundell came into the night with just one goal this season, then turned the game late and secured his first three-goal performance in 373 regular-season appearances.

Florida did plenty of damage before that late surge. Sam Reinhart opened the scoring with 1:45 left in the first period on a power-play goal, with Carter Verhaeghe setting him up from the left side of the net. Reinhart had time to operate untouched and finished off the far post.

The Panthers pushed it to 2-0 early in the second when Lundell found a second chance after his first shot was blocked by Dylan DeMelo. The puck bounced right back to him, and Lundell snapped it in from the left circle with Eetu Luostarinen screening Nico Daws.

Winnipeg’s best push came after a Florida coaching gamble backfired. Panthers coach Paul Maurice challenged a delay-of-game penalty on Dmitry Kulikov after the puck went over the glass, but the call stood and Florida took an extra penalty. That gave the Jets a 5-on-3, and Kyle Connor made them pay with six seconds left on the power play, using a slick move to beat Jones.

The Jets weren’t done there. Morgan Barron pulled Winnipeg within 3-2 with 11:14 left in the third, winning a battle on the right boards, driving the net and slipping one past Akira Schmid just inside the far post for his first goal of the season.

But Florida shut the door from there. Lundell restored the two-goal cushion with 6:27 remaining by tapping in a rebound after Lars Eller had hit the post earlier in the sequence. Then Lundell added the empty-net goal with 1:39 left to seal it.

Jones kept his scorching stretch going as well, extending a run that has now produced 17 points, including 16 assists, over his last nine games. Schmid backed it up in goal with 22 saves for his third straight win.

On the other side, Nico Daws got his first start for Winnipeg after being acquired last week from New Jersey and stopped 33 of 37 shots. The Jets have now lost eight in a row, matching the franchise record three times before, in 2000, 1994 and 1980.

Florida has won three straight and six of eight, and the Panthers also handled Winnipeg for the second time in as many days. Across those two games, Florida went 5-for-10 on the power play.

Jets Suddenly Have A Nino Niederreiter Problem To Solve

Nino Niederreiter has quietly become one of the more interesting names on Winnipegs roster as the Jets weigh how to handle a veteran forward in the final year of his contract. With no trade protection attached, he gives the club some flexibility, and his recent play has not matched the level he brought in previous seasons, which is part of why his situation has started to draw attention around the league.

The Jets have already had conversations with multiple teams, and the market is clearly there enough to keep the discussion alive. Still, this does not feel like a move on the verge of happening, and one of the bigger questions hanging over the talks is whether Winnipeg would need to keep part of the salary in order to get something done. Jets Face Mounting Pressure As Losing Streak Follows Them To Florida

The Jets arrive in Sunrise carrying far more baggage than they expected on this road trip. Winnipeg has dropped seven straight, and the offense has not been able to provide enough support to steady the group as the losses pile up. Now the challenge shifts to Florida, where the Panthers are rested and opening a three-game homestand, adding another layer of difficulty for a team trying to stop the slide.

For Winnipeg, the concern goes beyond one bad night or one missed chance. The lineup is already dealing with injuries, and the margin for error gets thinner when the goals dry up and the schedule keeps moving. The Jets have already seen how quickly Florida can punish mistakes, and this rematch offers another test of whether they can tighten up enough to keep the trip from getting worse. [Read more 🡒]

Jets Prospects Put Hot Start To The Test In Rockford

The Manitoba Moose are wrapping up a six-game road trip with a stop in Rockford, and the early returns have been encouraging for a Winnipeg organization that has been looking for its prospects to take a step. October has been a strong month for Manitoba, with the club piling up offense and getting contributions throughout the lineup while it heads into one more test before returning home in early November.

The Moose have been one of the AHLs most productive teams so far, and the challenge now is carrying that pace into a different building against the IceHogs. For the Jets, the bigger picture is whether this hot start is a sign of something sustainable, especially with another road swing waiting after the brief home stop. [Read more 🡒]
