The Manitoba Moose are heading into the 2026-27 season with a roster built around youth, draft pedigree and a heavy dose of Winnipeg Jets prospects.
The club announced its opening day group on Thursday, and it comes in at 26 players: 15 forwards, eight defencemen and three goaltenders. Ten of those players are Jets draft picks, and five were taken in the first two rounds of the NHL Draft.
At the top of that list are two first-rounders, Colby Barlow (WPG, ’23) and Brayden Yager (PIT, ’23), who will both be in the lineup when Manitoba opens the year. The Moose also have three more Jets prospects who were picked in the first three rounds: Nikita Chibrikov (2nd, ’21), Alfons Freij (2nd, ’24) and Danny Zhilkin (3rd, ’22).
There’s no shortage of fresh faces, either. Manitoba is carrying eight rookie skaters on its opening day roster, including Kevin He, the Jets’ 2024 fourth-round pick.
His debut will make him the first China-born player to suit up in the AHL. The rookie class also includes Kieron Walton, a sixth-round pick in 2024, after he piled up 180 points, with 78 goals and 102 assists, across his final two OHL seasons.
The Moose also made a few roster adjustments Thursday. Goaltender Alex Worthington and forward Sullivan Mack were assigned to the organization’s ECHL affiliate, the Bloomington Bison. Defenceman Sam Sedley and Grant Porter were also released from their tryout agreements.
Manitoba opens the regular season Saturday at 2 p.m. against the Chicago Wolves at home. The first 5,000 fans in attendance will receive a Moose schedule magnet.

Jets Season Opener Comes With Two Intriguing New Twists
The Jets season opener arrives with a little extra intrigue as they get set to face the Boston Bruins, a team that has already banked a win at home and now brings an early-season benchmark into Winnipeg. With projected lineups out ahead of the game, the matchup has the feel of a first real look at how this roster wants to come together out of the gate.
Among the details drawing the most attention are the expected NHL debuts of Viggo Bjrck and Tyrel Bauer, a pair of rookies who will be under the microscope right away in their first regular-season action. For Winnipeg, it is the kind of opening-night wrinkle that can add energy to the building, but it also leaves the bigger question hanging over how these new faces will fit once the puck drops. Jets Fans May Need Patience With Connor Hellebuyck Standoff
Connor Hellebuycks trade request has lingered into the fall, and for now the Winnipeg Jets are still waiting for the situation to sort itself out. The veteran goalie asked out in August, but he remains on the roster while Kevin Cheveldayoff and the front office work through a market that has not produced a deal yet.
Cheveldayoff has already signaled this is not the kind of move that will come together quickly, which fits with the reality of trying to move a player of Hellebuycks profile. NHL insider David Pagnotta has also reported that the San Jose Sharks have gathered information on his cost, a sign there is at least some outside interest, but there is still no trade in place and no clear end point for Jets fans hoping for resolution.
