The Winnipeg Jets have kicked off development camp with 32 invited players and prospects in town this week, and the first day already set the tone for what’s ahead.
Monday was all about off-ice testing, with the club also getting a chance to speak with two of its newest prospects: first-rounder Viggo Björck and seventh-rounder Alofa Tunoa Ta’amu. The next step comes Tuesday morning, when the goalies go on the ice at 9:30 a.m.
CT before the rest of the group skates at 10 a.m. A media availability is scheduled for 12:30 p.m.
There was also a notable roster move on Monday, with Winnipeg sending David Gustafsson to Pittsburgh in exchange for defenceman Jack St. Ivany.
The move came on the day NHL teams had to qualify their restricted free agents or risk seeing them become unrestricted and free to sign elsewhere on July 1. In the end, Winnipeg qualified two of the three players on its list.
Around the local hockey beat, the focus has been squarely on the Jets’ draft class and the roster questions still hanging over the team. The Winnipeg Free Press took a look at the long list of holes on the roster with free agency nearing, while also spotlighting Björck’s arrival in Winnipeg and the buzz building around him.
