WINNIPEG - Adam Lowry didn’t slam the door on Connor Hellebuyck, but he made it clear the Jets would need to have some tough conversations if the suspended goaltender comes back into the fold.
After Winnipeg’s 3-2 loss to the defending champion Carolina Hurricanes on Saturday, the Jets captain was asked about a report saying Hellebuyck’s suspension could end next Friday. Lowry said the situation would have to be addressed directly if Hellebuyck does return.
“He’s a good friend of mine. Do I love the decision?
Do I love the way it’s dragged on? No.
But we’ll handle the situation when it comes. Obviously we’re disappointed with the outcome, he’s one of the best goalies in the world,” Lowry said.
He added, “It’s unfair to speculate on what’s going to happen between now until Friday. But I think if he does show up there’s going to have to be conversations, there’s going to have to be kind of one of those water under the bridge things. Like I said we keep moving forward, we’re a team regardless of who’s in the room.”
Lowry also stressed that nothing is settled yet.
“I think once we all find out more we’ll be able to comment more but I think it’s unfair to speculate one way or the other how it’s going to shake out. There’s still a lot of time between now and then so we’ll see,” he said.
Head coach Scott Arniel wanted no part of the what-if game. His attention was on the games in front of him, not the possibility of Hellebuyck rejoining the roster.
“I really don’t care right now on that scenario. My focus is we got St.
Louis coming up. I’ve got to do some review against Carolina, there’s some areas I want to fix.
You know what, that part falls on [general manager Kevin Cheveldayoff],” Arniel said.
“I’m going to face that one when it happens, alright? I don’t know what next week is going to look like, and at the end of the day for me I got 23 guys, all they care about is winning hockey games. And so my preparation, my thoughts are on that.”
Hellebuyck’s status remains one of the major storylines surrounding Winnipeg. He asked for a trade from the Jets over the summer and did not report to training camp last month, leading the team to suspend him without pay. As of Saturday evening, he has already lost nearly 10 per cent of his $7.5 million salary for the season.
The trade picture is still active, too. TSN Hockey Insider Darren Dreger said Thursday on Insider Trading that Winnipeg is still working to move Hellebuyck. For now, though, the Jets have been getting enough from their current goaltending setup.
Clay Stevenson made 34 saves on 37 shots against Carolina on Saturday, and Stuart Skinner has also given Winnipeg steady play in net. Through five games this season, Skinner has posted a 2.76 goals-against average and a .906 save percentage.
Hellebuyck is under contract for the long haul, too, with a seven-year, $59 million deal that runs through the 2030-31 season and carries an $8.5 million cap hit.

Rangers Could Trigger The Goalie Domino That Reshapes This Market
Connor Hellebuycks situation has become one of the more closely watched threads in the goalie market, and the Winnipeg Jets may not be the only club waiting on a resolution. Elliotte Friedman reported that the New York Rangers could wind up shaping the market even without any interest in Hellebuyck themselves, as their next move in goal might help set everything else in motion. With Hellebuycks suspension nearing its end and Winnipeg believed to be looking to move him, the timing now feels tied to what develops elsewhere first.
The Rangers are being connected to separate goalie possibilities involving Buffalo, Carolina and Los Angeles, and those discussions could create the opening another team needs before a Hellebuyck deal can be completed. For the Jets, that means the path forward may depend less on their own urgency than on a chain reaction they cannot control. It is the kind of market wrinkle that can keep a prominent player in limbo a little longer, even when the general direction of the story already seems clear. [Read more 🡒]
Former Jet Comes Back To Haunt Winnipeg In Painful Loss
The night had a little extra weight before the puck even dropped, with the ceremony in support of the Toba Centre setting the tone in Winnipeg. On the ice, the Jets had their chances and got goals from Mark Scheifele and Alex Iafallo, but Carolina kept answering and ultimately left town with a 3-2 win after holding off a late push to level things.
A familiar face played a central role in the outcome, which only made the finish sting more for Winnipeg. The Hurricanes got the decisive goal from Nikolaj Ehlers, and with that marker he completed a rare personal checklist while leaving the Jets to sit with a loss that felt even harder given how close they came to extending the game. Cole Perfetti Is Giving The Jets One Early Reason For Confidence
Cole Perfetti is giving the Jets a timely reminder of why they locked him in long term this summer. After Winnipeg signed the young forward to a five-year extension in July, he has opened the season with the kind of early pace that gives a team confidence in both its present and its future, piling up offense while looking more and more comfortable as a top-six piece.
Perfettis start has been especially encouraging because it has come right as the Jets are trying to establish an early-season rhythm around their younger core. The production has been steady and noticeable through eight games, and if this level of play keeps up, Winnipegs bet on him is going to look better and better long before the season reaches its midpoint.
