The Winnipeg Jets may be catching their breath today after a bounce-back win over the St. Louis Blues, but the front office isn’t taking the day off. Trade chatter around the club continues to heat up, and two names keep surfacing: Luke Schenn and Vincent Trocheck.
Let’s start with Schenn. The veteran defenseman has been on the radar for a while now, and according to league insiders, the Jets are actively shopping him. Chris Johnston recently noted that Schenn is “one of the pieces they’re dangling,” and it sounds like a move could come sooner rather than later.
From Winnipeg’s perspective, the goal here is to recover some draft capital. General manager Kevin Cheveldayoff paid a premium-sending out a 2026 second-rounder and a 2027 fourth-to acquire Schenn and his $2.75 million cap hit.
That price tag has aged poorly, especially given Schenn’s limited production this season: one goal and five assists in 35 games. For a player with over 1,100 NHL games under his belt, Schenn brings experience and a physical presence, but the Jets are clearly hoping to flip him for at least a third-round pick.
It wouldn’t erase the overpay, but it would soften the blow.
Then there’s Vincent Trocheck. His name has started to circulate in trade discussions, and it’s not just idle speculation. The Minnesota Wild are reportedly keeping tabs, and teams like the Hurricanes, Kings, Blackhawks-and yes, the Jets-are believed to have interest.
Now, Trocheck isn’t a rental. He’s in year four of a seven-year deal, which means any team acquiring him is making a longer-term investment.
That could actually work in Winnipeg’s favor if they’re thinking beyond this season. Let’s be honest: with how things are trending, the Jets may need to shift their focus toward retooling rather than making a hard playoff push.
Trocheck would give them something they’ve been lacking-a dependable second-line center with a solid two-way game.
This season, Trocheck has posted 11 goals and 21 assists in 37 games. That’s steady production, and when you look at his career numbers-234 goals and 376 assists over 838 games-he’s proven he can contribute in a variety of roles.
The catch? He holds a modified no-trade clause, so whether he’d green-light a move to Winnipeg is another story.
Still, if the Jets are serious about reshaping their roster, it’s a conversation worth having.
The New York Rangers, Trocheck’s current team, are reportedly open to moving some of their key pieces, which could open the door for Winnipeg. Whether they walk through it remains to be seen, but it’s clear the Jets are exploring all options.
With the trade deadline creeping closer, Winnipeg’s front office is staying active. Whether it’s moving Schenn to recoup assets or taking a bigger swing on someone like Trocheck, the Jets are positioning themselves for what could be a pivotal stretch-not just for this season, but for the direction of the franchise moving forward.
