Jets Fans May Need Patience With Connor Hellebuyck Standoff

Jets GM Cheveldayoff warns fans of a prolonged process as the team navigates Connor Hellebuyck's trade request amid interest from the San Jose Sharks.

Connor Hellebuyck’s trade request is still sitting there without a finish line, and Winnipeg Jets general manager Kevin Cheveldayoff isn’t pretending otherwise.

Speaking with Darren Dreger on TSN, Cheveldayoff said the situation around the veteran goaltender may not move quickly. He pointed back to the early conversations between the team and Hellebuyck’s camp, making it clear that patience was always part of the picture.

“Well, in situations like this, you never know. You don’t have a crystal ball.

When I was first made aware of the situation - the conversations that Connor’s representation and myself had - were very clear and explicit that this could take a while. What ‘a while’ means I guess, is still undefined," Cheveldayoff said.

For now, there’s no deal in place, and Hellebuyck’s status remains unresolved as the 2026-27 regular season approaches. He also isn’t available on the ice at the moment, since he remains suspended after failing to report for training camp.

The trade chatter hasn’t stopped there, either. NHL insider David Pagnotta said on DFO Insider that the San Jose Sharks are one team that has been connected to Hellebuyck and that they checked in on what it would take to acquire him.

"One team about goaltending that I'm really curious about is San Jose; they've been tied to Connor Hellebuyck...they poked around just to see what the price tag is; it's more of an information collection type of mindset for the time being," Pagnotta said.

Hellebuyck’s most recent season with Winnipeg came in 2025-26, when he appeared in 57 games, stopped 1385 shots and posted an .895 save percentage.

Jets Season Opener Comes With Two Intriguing New Twists

The Jets season opener arrives with a little extra intrigue as they get set to face the Boston Bruins, a team that has already banked a win at home and now brings an early-season benchmark into Winnipeg. With projected lineups out ahead of the game, the matchup has the feel of a first real look at how this roster wants to come together out of the gate.

Among the details drawing the most attention are the expected NHL debuts of Viggo Bjrck and Tyrel Bauer, a pair of rookies who will be under the microscope right away in their first regular-season action. For Winnipeg, it is the kind of opening-night wrinkle that can add energy to the building, but it also leaves the bigger question hanging over how these new faces will fit once the puck drops. Jets Prospects Just Took Center Stage With Manitoba's Opening Roster

The Manitoba Mooses opening-day roster for the 2026-27 regular season offers an early look at how much of the Winnipeg Jets prospect pipeline will be on display in the AHL. The club named 26 players to the group, including 15 forwards, eight defensemen and three goaltenders, with 10 Jets draft picks and eight rookie skaters among the mix. For a Winnipeg organization that has been trying to turn draft capital into depth, the list is heavy on names worth tracking, including Colby Barlow and Brayden Yager.

There are also a few roster decisions that help clarify the first wave of the seasons pecking order. Manitoba trimmed its camp group by moving Alex Worthington and Sullivan Mack to its ECHL affiliate, while Sam Sedley and Grant Porter were released from tryout agreements. And among the more interesting under-the-radar developments, Kevin is in position to make his AHL debut and reach a small bit of league history in the process, adding another layer of intrigue to a roster that already looks like a useful barometer for the Jets next wave.
