Jets Fans Have Every Reason To Worry About This Slide

With their sixth consecutive loss and a struggling power play, the Winnipeg Jets find themselves in a precarious early-season position after falling to the Florida Panthers 5-1.

The Winnipeg Jets’ losing streak has reached six after a 5-1 setback against the Florida Panthers on Tuesday night at Canada Life Centre.

It was a game that turned quickly after the opening minutes. The first five minutes were fairly even, but once Cole Koepke took the game’s first penalty, Florida made the Jets pay.

Carter Verhaeghe scored on the power play for his seventh goal of the season, with Brady Tkachuk and Seth Jones earning the assists. A little more than a minute later, Niko Mikkola buried a wrist shot from near the faceoff dot to push the Panthers ahead 2-0.

Florida wasn’t done. Less than two minutes after that, the Panthers added another on the man advantage after the Jets were penalized for too many players on the ice.

Verhaeghe struck again, and suddenly Winnipeg was staring at a 3-0 deficit despite holding an 8-6 edge in shots after the opening period. Clay Stevenson gave up three goals on Florida’s first five shots, while Winnipeg also came up empty on its lone power play in the first.

The second period was tighter, with both clubs registering five shots in the first half of the frame. Florida got another power play after DeMelo was called for tripping, but the Jets kept the score right where it was.

Winnipeg finally broke through when Adam Lowry scored shorthanded on a wrap-around after Akira Schmid failed to connect on a pass behind his own net. Schmid lunged to stop the puck, but after a quick review the goal stood.

The momentum didn’t last long, though, as Sam Reinhart answered less than a minute later to restore Florida’s three-goal cushion.

Winnipeg had another late power play before the second intermission, but the man advantage stayed quiet and the Panthers carried a 4-1 lead into the third. Florida also led the shot count in the period, 11-10, and the Jets were left needing a big push to get back into it.

That push never really came. Winnipeg tried to chip away in the third, but Florida kept things under control before Brady Tkachuk scored with eight minutes left to make it 5-1. Matthew Tkachuk picked up his fourth assist of the night on the goal.

Stevenson ended up allowing five goals on 20 shots, while the Jets finished with a 25-24 edge in shots. Winnipeg is now 4-5-3 on the season, and the skid has stretched to six straight losses.

The Jets now turn the page to Thursday, when they begin a four-game road trip in Tampa Bay against the Lightning.

Coyotes Fans Should Watch This Sudden Goalie Situation In The West

The Jets are still waiting on one of their most important blue-line pieces, and the latest update offered at least a small step forward. Josh Morrissey will travel with Winnipeg on its upcoming road trip after missing seven games with an upper-body injury, giving the club a chance to see how he responds once the team is back on the road and back in game rhythm.

It is still unclear when Morrissey will be ready to return, which leaves Winnipeg with a familiar wait-and-see feel at a key point in the schedule. For a Jets team that relies heavily on his minutes and puck-moving ability, simply having him around the group is encouraging, but the real question is whether this trip finally brings him closer to playing again. Jets Special Teams Problem Is Getting Harder For Fans To Ignore

Special teams were in the spotlight again as the Winnipeg Jets dropped their sixth straight game, a 5-1 loss to the Florida Panthers that quickly turned into a long night. Florida struck early and often, scoring three times before the game was even out of its opening minutes, and two of those goals came with the man advantage, a familiar issue for a team trying to stop a skid before it deepens.

Adam Lowry provided the lone highlight for Winnipeg with a shorthanded goal, the kind of short-handed spark that at least offered a brief response amid the collapse. Even that moment came with a side note of its own, as the Jets captain moved into rare company on the franchise's all-time list, but the broader concern remains the same: the special-teams issues are no longer a small sample or an unlucky stretch. Jets Depth Is Already Being Tested In One Key Spot

The Manitoba Moose are back in action with a morning game against the Chicago Wolves, and the early start comes with a familiar sort of AHL urgency for Winnipegs organization. Brayden Yager has settled back in nicely since returning to the Moose, and Henry Thrun has been one of the steadier producers on the blue line, giving the farm club a few useful signs as it tries to keep things moving in the right direction.

Even so, the bigger storyline is the one bubbling just above the AHL level. Winnipegs recall of Elias Salomonsson left another opening on the Moose defense, and the club moved quickly to bring in Jack Matier on a professional tryout agreement. For a depth chart that is already being asked to absorb change, the next few days should offer a good look at how much flexibility the Jets have in reserve. [Read more 🡒]
