The Winnipeg Jets’ 2026-27 schedule arrived on July 16, and a handful of dates immediately jumped off the page. Every game still counts the same in the standings, but some nights carry more buzz, more storylines, and more reason to circle the calendar.
Here are five Jets games that stand out.
The season opens on Oct. 2, 2026, with the Boston Bruins coming to Canada Life Centre, and that alone makes it a big one. For Winnipeg, it’s Game 1 of 84 and the first chance to start erasing the memory of a rough 2025-26 season, when the club fell by 21 wins and 34 points and missed the playoffs after winning the 2024-25 Presidents’ Trophy.
Home openers always bring a jolt of energy, and this one should be no different. The Bruins are an Original Six team, and with their only trip to Winnipeg on the schedule, there should be plenty of black and gold mixed into the crowd.
The Jets had built a nice run in home openers before last season’s 5-4 loss to the Dallas Stars, winning seven straight dating back to 2018-19.
Then comes Oct. 25, 2026, when the Jets and Canadiens meet outdoors at Princess Auto Stadium in the 2026 Heritage Classic. It’s the first outdoor hockey in Winnipeg in a decade, and it’s more than just a game.
The Heritage Classic is a full weekend event that draws attention from across North America and brings visitors into the city. With fan bases as passionate as Winnipeg’s and Montreal’s, the atmosphere should be loud inside the stadium and around the city all weekend.
The buildup includes a Saturday-night alumni game at Canada Life Centre featuring retired Jets and Canadiens players. Winnipeg will also be chasing its first outdoor goal in the city after the 2016 Heritage Classic ended in a 3-0 shutout loss to the Edmonton Oilers.
On Dec. 28, 2026, the San Jose Sharks come to town, and the spotlight will be on Macklin Celebrini. The 20-year-old phenom is coming off a 45-goal, 115-point sophomore season and was named NHL 27’s cover athlete.
He’s part of a Sharks group that looks young, fast, and dangerous, the kind of team that gave the 2025-26 Jets trouble. That makes this post-Christmas matchup a useful measuring stick for Winnipeg, especially with offseason changes designed to make the club younger and quicker.
There’s another layer here too: it will be new Jets defenseman Mario Ferraro’s first game against the team that drafted him and the one he spent the first seven seasons of his career with.
March brings two more dates worth watching. On March 5, 2027, Alex Ovechkin makes his only trip to Winnipeg, and it could be the last time he ever plays there.
The 40-year-old, who has 929 goals and counting, signed a one-year deal with the Capitals, and many see this season as a drawn-out retirement tour for the 2004 first-overall pick. Jets fans may appreciate the career, but they’ve also seen enough of Ovechkin’s damage over the years: he has scored 58 goals in 77 games against the Atlanta Thrashers/Jets franchise, more than against any other team.
Finally, on March 20, 2027, former Jets coach Rick Bowness returns to Winnipeg with the Columbus Blue Jackets. Bowness coached the Jets for just two seasons, but his impact was immediate and lasting.
He took over a team that lacked identity and had a broken locker-room culture, then brought structure, accountability, and a clear defensive style. Winnipeg went 98-57-9 during his time behind the bench, and his fingerprints are still on the franchise through Adam Lowry’s captaincy and Josh Morrissey’s rise into an elite two-way defenseman.
Now 71, Bowness will come back on a one-year contract after un-retiring to take the Blue Jackets job midway through last season, and he should get a warm reception in Winnipeg.
