The Winnipeg Jets still have Connor Hellebuyck on the roster, but that may not be where this ends.
With the 2026 NHL season less than 40 days away, plenty around the league still looks unsettled in late summer, and Hellebuyck is one of the biggest names left in limbo. It’s hard not to wonder why he hasn’t moved already, especially with teams usually sorting out their goaltending plans before October arrives. One possibility: clubs may simply be waiting to see how their goalies perform in training camp and preseason before making a move.
That was the discussion on a recent episode of Daily Faceoff LIVE, where co-hosts Tyler Yaremchuk and Carter Hutton broke down the situation.
Yaremchuk pointed to a comment from a viewer who asked, “Is Hellebuyck too expensive, or are teams gun shy over his playoff performance or non-playoff performances? I’ll just chime in quickly and I don’t even know if it’s that, I just think the Jets might be asking for the sun, the moon, and the stars here.
Hutton pushed back on the idea that teams would be hesitant because of concern over Hellebuyck himself. “I don’t think there’s any buyer beware here. If you have a chance to get Connor Hellebuyck as your goalie, you’re going to take it, but at what expense?
He then framed the situation through the Jets’ roster and salary structure, noting that Winnipeg has Hellebuyck and Stuart Skinner making $3.75 million, while Hellebuyck is at $8.5 million. Hutton also pointed to a Winnipeg team that was “kind of miserable last year” even after what he called a Presidents’ Trophy run, saying there could still be value in a deal.
And from Winnipeg’s side, Hutton said the timing matters. “And I think if you’re the Winnipeg Jets, at some point you want to move him because at 33, if you wait two or three more years, there’s no more value left in them.”
