Ducks Soar Past Jets with Dominant Display, Ending Winnipeg's Streak
The Winnipeg Jets' impressive six-game point streak hit a wall last night as they fell 4-1 to the Anaheim Ducks. This marks the first time since the Olympic break that the Jets have failed to secure at least one point, putting a damper on their season-long, eight-game homestand.
Morgan Barron managed to light up the scoreboard for the Jets, with Elias Salomonsson earning his first NHL assist on the play. However, the Ducks' relentless shooting and a second-period surge proved too much for Winnipeg to handle, as Anaheim netted three goals in just under two minutes.
Jets' captain Adam Lowry summed up the night, saying, "Just start to finish, we weren't very good. We're going to have to learn from that. We've still got belief in this group and get ready for our game on Thursday.”
The opening period at Canada Life Centre was a quiet affair, with the Jets struggling to find their rhythm. Connor Hellebuyck's solid goaltending kept them in the game, but the Ducks outshot the Jets 8-2.
The second period saw a brief spark from Winnipeg, as Barron scored early. Yet, that was where the good news ended.
The Ducks responded with vigor, scoring three goals in a rapid-fire sequence. Tim Washe, Ryan Poehling, and Alex Killorn all found the back of the net, giving Anaheim a commanding 3-1 lead.
By the end of the period, the Ducks had a staggering 28-5 shot advantage.
Despite an early third-period power play and some pressure from the Isak Rosen-Jonathan Toews line, the Jets couldn't capitalize. The home crowd, eager for offense, chanted for the team to "shoot the puck," but the Jets couldn't find their groove.
Lowry reflected on the performance, noting, "It's a disappointing result; we know where we're at. The only thing we can do now is learn from it and make sure this doesn't happen again.”
In a last-ditch effort, Winnipeg pulled Hellebuyck for an extra attacker with three minutes remaining. A timeout led to a Kyle Connor shot that rang off the crossbar, but the Ducks' defense held firm. Jackson LaCombe sealed the victory with an empty-net goal.
Hellebuyck faced a barrage, stopping 30 of 33 shots, while Lukas Dostal made 13 saves for Anaheim.
Looking ahead, the Jets will face the New York Rangers on Thursday, followed by matchups against Colorado and St. Louis over the weekend.
