The reaction fits a familiar pattern. Leafs fans have long been convinced that Connor McDavid will eventually make his way back to Toronto, even though there has been next to no evidence to support that idea. It’s become a yearly ritual, and this September’s version is being fueled by a particularly flimsy clue.
At first glance, the post does seem like the kind of thing that might raise eyebrows. McDavid’s wife wearing Leafs gear while her husband skates for Edmonton is the sort of visual that invites instant theories.
But the actual context points somewhere else entirely.
Lauren Kyle McDavid is more than just the spouse of the NHL’s best player. She runs multiple businesses, including an interior design firm called Kyle and Co. and a premium sportswear label, Sports Club Atelier.
Through SCA, she has already worked with several hockey teams to create premium merchandise, including collaborations with the Oilers and Hockey Canada. She has also built a reputation around WAG playoff jackets and designed clothing for the wives and girlfriends of the Dallas Stars and the Stanley Cup-winning Carolina Hurricanes this past season.
That makes the Leafs-themed post look a lot more like brand expansion than some hidden signal about Connor McDavid’s future.
The story that set off the chatter also didn’t even come directly from Lauren’s account. It was a repost from the SCA page asking people to vote on their preferred color for the upcoming merch. And the brand itself tried to calm things down with a follow-up message, saying it is expanding to 12 teams this season and will have an Oilers version of the merch as well.
“PSA: Everyone needs to relax,” the story read. “Sports Club Atelier is growing this year and expanding to 12 teams. We don’t discriminate, even the rivals.”
Could Connor McDavid one day play for the Maple Leafs? Sure. But using Lauren Kyle McDavid’s Instagram story about her clothing brand as evidence is a huge leap.
