The Buffalo Sabres may have missed on Patrick Kane, but the bigger question now is whether that changes how hard they keep pushing for Connor Hellebuyck.
Buffalo and Winnipeg were reportedly close to a deal before the June draft, with the Sabres trying to land the Jets goaltender in a package built around the fourth-overall pick, Jack Quinn, and “perhaps another ask”. The talks fell apart when Buffalo decided the price was too rich. Since then, Winnipeg’s asking price has apparently only climbed.
Nick Kypreos reported that the Jets are now asking for Zach Benson, and Buffalo’s answer was a firm “that’s not happening.”
For now, Kevin Cheveldayoff doesn’t sound like a general manager in a hurry. Hellebuyck still has five years left on his deal, and aside from saying he’s ready to move on, there’s no sign he’s pressing Winnipeg for a move. That leaves the Jets in a comfortable spot: they can wait for the right offer instead of forcing the issue.
Still, Kane’s choice to return to Chicago instead of heading to Buffalo may have changed the mood a bit. If the Sabres viewed Kane and Hellebuyck as the kind of double hit that could really move the needle, losing out on one of those names could make the other feel even more important.
Hellebuyck by himself would be a major addition. Pairing him with Kane would have been a huge swing for Buffalo and, as the source material puts it, would have changed things in the Eastern Conference.
So the Sabres are left with a simple but uncomfortable question: after missing on Kane, can they afford to come up empty on Hellebuyck too?
Buffalo doesn’t necessarily have to force the issue. But without Kane in the fold, there’s no easy fallback if the Hellebuyck pursuit stalls again. And that may be why Sabres fans are now waiting for something big.
