Connor Hellebuyck Standoff Is Becoming A Massive Jets Trade Test

Craig Button's backing of the Jets' GM highlights the high-stakes chess game over Connor Hellebuyck's future, where patience may prove to be the team's greatest ally.

TSN analyst Craig Button is urging the Winnipeg Jets to stand their ground in the Connor Hellebuyck standoff, even if the situation drags on for months.

Appearing on OverDrive, Button said Winnipeg should not move the three-time Vezina Trophy winner unless the return reflects Hellebuyck’s actual value. He went as far as saying the Jets should be prepared to let the situation linger.

"I not only think that they're ready to let him sit and blow $39,000 a year, but the fans in Winnipeg are also encouraging the Winnipeg Jets; they keep doing that. Until Kevin Cheveldayoff gets a deal that’s commensurate with the value of Connor Hellebuyck, he shouldn’t trade him one second before that. And if that means he sits out for a year, he sits out for six months, or he sits out for four months… I think it’s the right thing to do," said Button.

Button also argued that backing down now could create problems later, especially if other players see a precedent being set. He said there are teammates who are already irritated by the situation.

"I think it's about showing the other players because if he lets this one slip, and I don't think Kevin will. I don't think that's in his DNA.

Then what happens down the road? What happens with other players that might do this?

I think it's about the market. I think it's about the star players that are there."

Hellebuyck remains suspended by the Jets after asking for a trade and not reporting to camp. He is signed through a seven-year, $59.5 million contract.

Trade chatter around Hellebuyck has continued, and the Edmonton Oilers have been floated as a possible landing spot. NHL insider David Pagnotta said Hellebuyck would seriously consider Edmonton under the right circumstances, but only if the deal involved pieces the Oilers would not normally want to move.

“I heard Savoie’s name, people suggesting Howard and all that stuff. I don’t see the pathway to making something like that happen at his current clip […] I do think Hellebuyck would seriously consider going to Edmonton, but I don’t see a pathway there unless you’re talking about players that nobody expects to get moved out of Edmonton, and myself included, ‘cause I just don’t see it.”

Hellebuyck also has a full no-move clause and is reportedly looking for a team that can contend within the next few seasons.

Jets' First Regulation Loss Puts One Early Concern In Focus

The first regulation loss of the season arrived in a lopsided way for Winnipeg, as the Jets fell 5-1 to the Anaheim Ducks and saw a three-game winning streak come to an end. Kyle Connor supplied the lone goal for the Jets in his 700th NHL game, but the night belonged to a Ducks group that got an early lift from Judd Caulfield, who scored his first NHL goal.

For Winnipeg, the bigger concern was how little traction the offense found when the game tilted against it. The Jets could not capitalize on their chances with the extra skater, and when a night like this turns into chasing the game, the margin for error gets thin in a hurry. It was only one loss in a long season, but it did put an early pressure point in view. [Read more 🡒]

Rangers Desperation Just Put Connor Hellebuyck Back In The Spotlight

The Rangers goaltending situation has pushed them into the kind of desperation that naturally pulls another teams star into the conversation, and this time its Connor Hellebuyck back in the spotlight. With Igor Shesterkin out for the season and Joonas Korpisalo unavailable for several weeks, New Yorks need in net has become impossible to ignore, which is why the idea of a blockbuster swing at Winnipegs Vezina-caliber starter is making the rounds as a theoretical fix.

It is still only a proposal, not a real negotiation, but the concept shows how far the Rangers might have to go if they wanted to chase a true answer between the pipes. Any such move would come with major obstacles on Winnipegs side, starting with the fact that Hellebuyck controls his fate, and ending with the sort of draft-and-player package it would take to even get the Jets to listen. Maple Leafs Get Encouraging OEL Update But One Wait Remains

Oliver Ekman-Larsson was back on the ice for practice after the head injury he took in a game, a small but meaningful step for the Maple Leafs as they try to sort through their blue-line health. It does not guarantee he is ready for the next game, but it at least gives Toronto something more encouraging than a blank injury update, especially at a point in the schedule when every available defenseman matters.

For Winnipeg, the broader lesson is familiar: availability can shape the entire conversation around a team, whether it is a veteran defenseman easing back into practice or Connor Hellebuyck still sitting out and leaving fans watching the situation closely. The Jets keep waiting for clarity on his status, and one supporter has even turned that wait into a running online tally, a sign of just how much the uncertainty around their star goaltender has taken hold.
