Connor Hellebuyck Knows His Winnipeg Return Could Get Emotional

In an emotional homecoming, Connor Hellebuyck reflects on his Winnipeg departure and anticipates how Jets fans will greet his return this November.

Connor Hellebuyck’s first trip back to Winnipeg as a former Jet is almost here, and he’s not pretending it’s going to be routine.

The Devils are set to visit the Jets on November 10 at Canada Life Centre, marking Hellebuyck’s first return to Winnipeg since the trade that ended his 11-season run with the club. Tickets on Ticketmaster were listed from $171, with the highest price at $1,183, according to Radio-Canada.

Hellebuyck was dealt by Winnipeg on Oct. 23 to New Jersey in a package that brought back Dawson Mercer, Nick Bjugstad, Nico Daws, the rights to Alexander Command, a 2029 second-round pick and a 2027 seventh-round pick. The move came on the same day his unpaid suspension was set to expire after beginning Sept. 16, when he skipped training camp.

Just four days after the trade, Hellebuyck was already back in goal for the Devils, stopping 17 of 18 shots in a 5-1 win over the Stars in Dallas. It was his first NHL appearance since April 13.

After New Jersey’s 4-3 shootout win over Connor McDavid and the Oilers, Hellebuyck spoke about what’s ahead in Winnipeg.

“The majority of my best memories are there. I look forward to going back and seeing the place, how they react,” he said.

“But I do look forward ... I had a great time there," said Hellebuyck to ESPN.

The circumstances around his departure had been building for months. CBC News reported that Hellebuyck’s trade request came after online harassment directed at him and his family following his Olympic gold with Team USA in Milan and a visit to the White House. In September, Cheveldayoff said the situation had grown serious enough that team security and local police were involved, with extra monitoring around Hellebuyck’s Winnipeg home.

Inside the Jets room, there wasn’t much appetite for a sentimental reunion before the deal was done. Captain Adam Lowry said if Hellebuyck came back, “conversations are going to have to happen.”

Once Winnipeg moved him, Lowry said the uncertainty was finally gone.

“It was a bit of a cloud hanging over our heads. It’s nice we can look forward now.

We don’t have to keep talking about it. We’ve got guys that want to be here," said Lowry.

Mark Scheifele echoed that relief, while also acknowledging what Hellebuyck meant to the franchise.

“... just not having to answer questions and being able to move on with the team we have moving forward is good for clarity... He’s one of the best goalies in the world. Three Vezinas, Hart Trophy, a goalie that got us to some places, memories I’ll remember forever."

Jets End Nine-Game Skid With A Comeback Fans Will Never Forget

After nine straight losses, the kind of stretch that can wear on a room and a fan base alike, the Jets finally found a way to turn a night around in a hurry against Montreal. Winnipeg trailed deep into regulation before suddenly catching fire in the closing minutes, piling up four goals in the final 2:39 just to force overtime and give the building a jolt it had been waiting for.

Kyle Connor led the late surge with two goals, while Morgan Barron also chipped in as the Jets erased the deficit in dramatic fashion. Winnipeg finished with a 47-22 shot advantage, a sign that the pressure had been building long before the comeback finally arrived, and the result offered a much-needed release after a frustrating skid that had seemed to drag on forever. Blue Jackets Send A Clear Message With Latest Roster Shuffle

The waiver wire has already started to reshape the edges of the roster picture, and for Winnipeg it comes with a familiar name in Brad Lambert. The Jets forward was waived earlier in the week and has now cleared, keeping him in the organizations plans for the moment as teams around the league continue to sort through their depth options.

Columbus added to that churn by placing defenseman Emil Andrae and forward Danton Heinen on waivers, a move that signals the Blue Jackets are willing to make some hard calls on the back end and up front. Andrae had suited up in five games and picked up two assists, while Heinen had gone 10 games without scoring, and the latest shuffle only adds another layer to a market that Winnipeg is watching closely. Lightning Are Sending A Clear Kucherov Message As Trade Talk Swirls

The Jets recent slide has naturally put a spotlight on the bigger-picture questions around the club, but for now the message from management is restraint. Winnipeg has not shown any sign it is preparing to make a coaching change, even as the losses pile up and the pressure around the team grows. Scott Arniel remains in place, and the organization appears content to let things play out rather than react quickly to the slump.

Across the league, another star-driven situation is drawing attention, with Tampa Bay making its stance on Nikita Kucherov unmistakably clear. Lightning GM Julien BriseBois has said he is not interested in moving the winger, and Kucherov has not pushed for a destination of his own. The chatter around his future is still alive, but it may end up being more of a summer decision than a deadline move, which only adds to the sense that the trade market could stay quiet on one of the biggest names involved.
