Andrew Copp Exits Early as Red Wings Face Panthers Challenge

Red Wings' playoff hopes take a hit as key player Andrew Copp exits with injury during a crucial matchup against the Panthers.

In a tough turn of events for the Detroit Red Wings, center Andrew Copp was forced to leave Tuesday night's matchup against the Florida Panthers due to a lower-body injury. The 31-year-old, hailing from Ann Arbor, Michigan, logged just over 10 minutes on the ice, contributing an assist before his early exit in the second period.

Copp's injury occurred during a faceoff shortly after he set up Justin Faulk's goal, which had given the Red Wings a momentary boost. Unfortunately, a tangle with Panthers center Tomas Nosek saw Copp fall awkwardly, favoring his left leg. He needed assistance to leave the ice, and by the second intermission, the Red Wings had confirmed he would not return.

This season, Copp has been a steady presence for Detroit, tallying eight goals and 29 assists over 65 games, tying him with Patrick Kane for fifth in team scoring. Despite leading 3-2 with just 90 seconds left in the third period, the Red Wings couldn't hold off the Panthers.

Carter Verhaeghe's two late goals, including one with just 15 seconds remaining, sealed a 4-3 defeat for Detroit. The loss leaves the Red Wings clinging to a wild card playoff spot in the Eastern Conference.

Copp is in the midst of his fourth season with Detroit, playing under a five-year contract signed in 2022 that carries a $5.625 million annual cap hit. Originally drafted by the Winnipeg Jets in 2013, Copp turned professional after a solid collegiate career at the University of Michigan. He spent nearly eight seasons with the Jets before a trade to the New York Rangers in 2022, where he made an immediate impact, notching 18 points in 18 games and adding 14 more in the playoffs as the Rangers pushed to the Eastern Conference Final.

Over his NHL career spanning 765 games with the Jets, Rangers, and Red Wings, Copp has accumulated 122 goals and 337 points, along with nine goals and 26 points in 54 playoff appearances. His experience and skill have been vital to the teams he's played for, and the Red Wings will certainly feel his absence as they fight to maintain their playoff position.
