WVUs Bowl Push Suddenly Rests On One Late-Season Question

With just one more win needed for bowl eligibility, the West Virginia Mountaineers are navigating a challenging schedule with newfound momentum and strategic match-ups that could redefine their season.

West Virginia is one win away from bowl eligibility, and the path ahead gives the Mountaineers a real chance to keep climbing.

The turnaround has come fast. After dropping three straight, WVU has responded with back-to-back wins heading into the bye week, and the latest one stood out for a reason this team had not yet leaned on: defense. Even so, the offense did enough in its own right, putting up 24 points against TCU, the Big 12’s best defense, which is twice what the Horned Frogs had been allowing.

With four games left, the Mountaineers need just one more victory to lock in a bowl berth. Several projections already have them slotted in different places, including the Liberty Bowl against South Carolina from Athlon Sports, the Radiance Technologies Independence Bowl against Cal from CBS Sports, Oregon State from College Football News, UConn from ESPN’s Kyle Bonagura, Washington from ESPN’s Mark Schlabach, Illinois in the First Responder Bowl from Sports Illustrated, and Auburn in the Liberty Bowl from West Virginia On SI.

The remaining schedule is loaded with challenges: at No. 13 Texas Tech (6-1), Kansas (3-4), at No.

18 Houston (6-2), and at No. 6 Utah (7-0).

There are three ranked teams still ahead, which makes the home game against Kansas the most obvious place to target for that sixth win. But the matchup in Lubbock, and really any of the four, can’t be brushed aside.

TCU’s defense has been the toughest unit WVU has faced so far, and Utah presents another strong defensive test. Still, Texas Tech, Kansas, and Houston all have areas to clean up, and that becomes harder when they’re dealing with an offense like West Virginia’s.

Coming out of the bye, the expectation is for the Mountaineers’ attack to return to the high-powered form it has shown before. If that happens and the defense keeps building on what it did against TCU, WVU could make some noise before the regular season ends.

WVU's Breakout Quarterback Just Made The Future Feel More Urgent

Mike Hawkins Jr. has given West Virginia exactly the kind of jolt it hoped for when it added him to the program, and his early impact has been impossible to ignore. The quarterbacks legs have already put him among the nations most productive rushers, and Rich Rodriguez has been openly enthusiastic about what Hawkins brings to the offense while making clear he wants to keep him in Morgantown for the rest of his eligibility.

The conversations around Hawkins, though, are no longer just about what he has done on the field. West Virginia and Hawkins have been discussing his future, and the broader sense around the situation is that he has been weighing more than money alone when it comes to his next move. For a program trying to build around a breakout quarterback, that makes the coming stretch feel especially important. [Read more 🡒]

WVU's 2027 Dream Could Hinge On These 10 Decisions

West Virginia heads into the bye week at 5-3, with the present offering plenty to like and the future still very much in motion. Beyond the wins and the push to finish strong, there is a bigger roster question hanging over the program: which core pieces are going to be around long enough to help shape the Mountaineers through 2027? That is the backdrop for a handful of players whose development, usage and timing all matter for what comes next.

Some are already established, others are still building toward bigger roles, and a few sit at the center of decisions that will affect how the roster looks over the next couple of seasons. There is also the practical matter of retention, with ongoing contract talks for one leading player and other situations tied to whether key contributors stay in college or explore the professional path. For a team with clear needs at certain spots, these decisions could end up carrying as much weight as anything that happens on the field this fall. [Read more 🡒]

WVUs Defense Faces Its Biggest Test In A Brutal Stretch

West Virginias defense came up with the kind of closing sequence that can steady a team, even in a game where the yards and explosive plays piled up against it. The Mountaineers leaned on timely stops throughout the win over TCU, then finished the job with a late strip-sack and recovery that sealed the outcome, giving the group a tangible lift after a performance that still left plenty to clean up.

Now comes the harder part, because the schedule ahead will ask more of that side of the ball than a single momentum-building finish can answer. The coaching staff wants the defense to grow from the confidence it gained against TCU, but it will have to sharpen its consistency quickly as West Virginia moves into a brutal stretch. [Read more 🡒]
