West Virginia has added a Big Ten opponent to its 2027 football schedule, with athletic director Wren Baker announcing Tuesday morning that Purdue will visit Morgantown for a home game.
The date for the matchup will be set later, once the rest of the non-conference schedule is finalized. Baker said the game gives the Mountaineers the 10 Power 4 opponents they need under the expanded College Football Playoff format.
“We are looking forward to hosting Purdue in Morgantown next season for the first time since 1995,” Baker said. “It is an important addition for us, because it now gives us 10 Power 4 games on our schedule, which is a requirement in the expanded College Football Playoff.
It also gives us a regional Big Ten opponent visiting Milan Puskar Stadium, which I know Mountaineer Nation will be excited about. With the addition of Purdue, we will have further announcements on our 2027 schedule as we finalize everything in the coming days."
Before this addition, West Virginia had nine Power Four games lined up for 2027. The current Big 12 slate includes home games against Arizona State, BYU, Iowa State and UCF, along with road trips to Baylor, Cincinnati, Colorado, Kansas State and Oklahoma State.
One non-conference game will have to come off the schedule, and VMI appears to be the most likely candidate to stay in place as the FCS opponent. The home game against Ohio is part of a 2-for-1 arrangement, with the other home date against the Bobcats set for 2029. If Ohio is the game that gets removed and nothing else shifts, West Virginia could end up opening the season against a Power Four opponent.
Purdue’s current non-conference schedule includes games against UAlbany on 8/28, at Notre Dame on 9/4 and Miami Ohio on 9/11.
The matchup will be the third all-time meeting between West Virginia and Purdue, and the series is tied 1-1. Purdue beat the Mountaineers 26-24 in Morgantown in 1995, and West Virginia returned the favor with a 20-6 win in West Lafayette the next season.

West Virginia Freshman Gives Fans A Lot To Talk About After Opener
West Virginias season opener had the kind of feel-good start every team wants, and freshman Miles Sadler was right at the center of it. In a 91-46 win over Niagara, Sadler made an immediate impression in his collegiate debut, leading the Mountaineers with 16 points while also handing out nine assists and picking up three steals.
The larger takeaway for West Virginia was just as encouraging. After a first half that still had some room to tighten up, the defense sharpened considerably after the break and helped force 24 turnovers, turning the game into a runaway. For a team looking to set a tone early, the combination of a lopsided finish and a freshman guard already looking comfortable gave fans plenty to discuss. [Read more 🡒]
WVU Has A Mike Hawkins Jr. Decision That Could Shape Everything
West Virginias long-term quarterback picture is starting to come into focus, and Mike Hawkins Jr. sits right at the center of it. He has not yet signed a new deal to stay with the Mountaineers beyond the 2026 season, but discussions are ongoing, and there is no indication the relationship between Hawkins, his family and the coaching staff has cooled. For a program trying to stabilize and build forward at the same time, keeping a young quarterback in place matters almost as much as finding the next wave of help.
Rich Rodriguez has made it clear that the Mountaineers see underclassmen like Hawkins as foundational pieces, not just short-term depth. West Virginia believes it can hold onto its key players while still adding talent through the transfer portal, but the Hawkins situation is the kind of decision that can shape the roster well beyond one season. If the staff can close the gap there, it would be a meaningful sign that the programs future is starting to take shape the way it wants. [Read more 🡒]
WVU Opens A New Era With Gia Cooke In The Spotlight
West Virginias basketball season is already underway on the mens side, and now the women are set to open a new chapter of their own when Mark Kelloggs team hosts Rhode Island. It is the first game of the 2026-27 season for a Mountaineers program trying to establish its identity under a new coach, with Gia Cooke expected to be one of the names at the center of that effort.
Rhode Island arrives with a fresh start of its own, entering Year 1 under Colleen Mullen after she was hired away from UAlbany. The Rams have a few familiar pieces to watch, including Martina Borrellas, but this matchup is really about two programs beginning new eras at the same time and giving an early look at how quickly each side can settle in.
