West Virginia’s latest football roster update brought a mix of familiar spring movement and a few new wrinkles, including one name change and six jersey number changes.
The update also filled in some useful details on several players, from freshmen quarterbacks to transfers expected to factor into the rotation.
Brown is now the third freshman quarterback on the roster, joining Jyron Hughley and John Johnson III, both of whom enrolled early. The California senior at Sherman Oaks HS threw for 1,975 yards and 16 touchdowns while also rushing for 970 yards and 21 scores.
The Mississippi State transfer drew attention during spring ball and is expected to get real playing time, even if he opens as the No. 3 option behind Ryan Ward and Clemson transfer Josh Sapp.
The All-Sun Belt Third Team Defense selection is back in the number he wore at Coastal Carolina. Expectations are high, and he’ll get a quick chance to make an impression when he debuts as a Mountaineer against his former team.
How big his role becomes this season remains to be seen, especially with Ben Cutter, Tyler Stoksly, Cam Torbor, and Ashton Woods - when healthy - likely absorbing plenty of snaps. At UNLV last season, he finished with 46 tackles, 1.5 tackles for loss, and a sack.
Stolsky arrived from Florida Atlantic during the winter and fits the mold of a Rich Rodriguez player: nasty, tough, physical, and relentless on contact. Skill-wise, he was compared to a Reid Carrico, only a little faster.
Tobor could push for a starting job and give WVU more length and athleticism at the second level. Even if he doesn’t win that spot, he’s expected to play significant snaps and develop into a stud.
Diagne also picked up a jersey change, and the roster now lists his pronunciation as “chomz jine.” The Georgia State transfer looks locked in as a starter and could wind up being the most consistent player at the position, with the highest ceiling on the unit.
