West Virginia’s receiver room may be getting a little thinner, at least for now, as Armoni Weaver-Bomar’s status for the Iowa State game remains up in the air.
Rich Rodriguez said Monday night on his radio show that the redshirt freshman is dealing with a finger injury and that the Mountaineers don’t yet know whether he’ll be available.
"He's got a finger issue, so we don't know what his availability will be," Rodriguez said during his radio show on Monday night.
Weaver-Bomar’s season has already been a stop-and-start one. Through four games, he has played just 36 snaps, and his night against Oklahoma State was cut short after he injured his finger on an eight-yard jet sweep carry.
That limited usage has made it tough to get a full read on what he and the rest of West Virginia’s receivers can really do, especially with the passing game still operating in a constrained way. Even so, Weaver-Bomar has flashed.
His biggest moment came in the opener against Coastal Carolina, when he hauled in the first touchdown pass of the season from Mike Hawkins Jr. for a 49-yard score. He slipped past the inside corner and outran the safety, turning it into an easy strike.
If Rodriguez eventually leans more heavily on the quick passing game, Weaver-Bomar’s speed could make him a key piece. There’s a strong case that he’s the fastest offensive player on the Mountaineers roster.
West Virginia is expected to release its first availability report of the week later tonight around 10 p.m. ET. With today and tomorrow serving as the team’s two heavy practice days, Weaver-Bomar would likely need to get some work in over the next two days - even if only in a limited capacity - to have a shot at playing against the Cyclones.
Last season, the redshirt freshman appeared in three games, with most of his action coming in the finale against Texas Tech. He came out of Westside High School in Anderson, South Carolina, and originally committed to Appalachian State with his brother, ChaMarryus Bomar, before both players flipped to WVU. His other offers included Boston College, Charlotte, Cincinnati, Coastal Carolina, Duke, East Carolina, James Madison, Liberty, Marshall, Maryland, Missouri, Old Dominion, UAB, Vanderbilt, Virginia Tech, and several others.
